This is my first bug in bugzilla, so be nice to me.... I configured linux/mozilla email client to be my backup email reader for when I am in Linux. I selected the option to leave all email messages on the POP server, since my master email archive is on a different machine. The problem: every time I launch the Mozilla email client it re-downloads HUNDREDS of messages from the POP server, even though it has already downloaded the same messages previously. I now have many copies of each message. Expected: I would expect the email client to only download messages it hasn't downloaded previously. Other email clients (Outlook Express) do this correctly. ISP: I'm using AT&T @ Home for my internet/POP connectivity. Mozilla Version: 0.9.6/Linux Linux Version: Red Hat 7.2 (Enigma) Thanks! Travis
When did you first see this or has it been happening ever since you started using mozilla.
I've only attempted to read my POP mail with the current (?) build of Mozilla, 0.9.6, which I've had installed for two days now.
Could you give build-id details? (Help- About mozilla) sheela, can you try reproducing this?
Here's the help-about info...: Mozilla 0.9.6 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.6) Gecko/20011120 Other details: This machine is on DHCP running behind a small firewall/internet sharing device. I can set you up for a SSH/remote X session if need be.
Reporter: In MailNews, if you click Edit-> "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings" you get the Account Settings prefs. Click "Server Settings" below your account. To the right there are some checkboxes, one is for "Leave messages on server". Is that checked? In order to not download again, it should be unchecked.
This is exactly the behavior I'm claiming is incorrect. I should not have to repeatedly download the same messages just because I elect not to have them removed from the server. Once messages are removed from the POP server I cannot get to them from any other machine. I only want to have messages removed from the server when I download them to the machine with the master email archive, but there are many machines I need to be able to check my POP mail on. This behavior is implemented correctly with Outlook Express -- the client is smart enough to look at messages on the server and to distinguish which ones have been downloaded already and which ones are new. I think the Mozilla email client ought to be able to do that as well.

similar/dup: bug 111224
Build: 2001-11-27-06 linux RH 6.2 I am not able to see duplicate downloads of mail. I created pop account on my win98 machine and downloaded messages, keeping leave messages on the server checked. Next created a new profile on my linux machine with the same pop account and downloaded the messages again with leave messages on the server. Result: No duplicate messages were downloaded. Also I did compose and send about 5 messages on win98 machine and got the messages on my linux box for that account. Only those 5 messages were downloaded and no dups. Reporter, Can you try a new profile on the machine where you are seeing dups. Also do you have leave messages on the server checked or unchecked on the your master archive machine?
My master email archive machine is not running mozilla. It does not leave copies of messages on the server. How do I create a new profile? I created a new linux user account, configured email for that account, and the messages only downloaded once. Perhaps the number of messages on the server has an affect; I have ~460 that are repeatedly downloaded. If it's helpful I can arrange ssh access to this machine -- for my normal user this reproduces 100% of the time.
I tried another test account with 340 messages and still was not able to reproduce this problem. I don't think number of messages makes any difference. I suggest that you create a new profile. -Start the application with -profilemanager from the terminal. -This will bring up the profile manager window. From there click on create new profile. -You will give the name of the profile. -And select the profile you just created and launch the browser. -When you start your mail from the tasks menu you will see the account wizard and create the same account in this profile. I hope that your new profile would work
The important thing to note here is that both leave message on server and *not* leave message on the server are working as expected.

I havent' forgotten about you guys -- my iternet access is down right now with the AT&T thing. I will do the additional testing with a new profile when they get me back online.

The behaviour has, after it was working nicely for quite a while, just happened to me again. I've upgraded to Mozilla 0.9.7 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.7) Gecko/20011221 a few days ago, and now after i've left Mozilla open while being away for some time it downloaded all the messages i left on the server a second time. So i think it would be correct to reopen the bug. Regards, Brian
I've been using mozilla mail client for almost 2 years and never had this problem until last week. I have "Leave msgs on server" checked as well as "Delete msgs on server when deleted locally". When everything is working fine I have a popstate.dat file with as many entries as I have msgs on the remote server. Then, sometimes (but not every time), after a new message has arrived in my remote inbox I click "Get New Messages" but the mail client says wrongly "There are no new messages on the server". At that point, I can see that my popstate.dat file has lost all its entries. Now, clicking on "Get New Messages" again will naturally download all messages from the remote server (incl. the one I had just received) because the popstate.dat file is empty, I guess. After this happened a few times, I emptied my remote and local inbox (I was getting tired of downloading ~1,300 msgs every time). Same thing with the fewer and different messages. I also tried downgrading to 1.0 and 1.0.1 to no avail. The weird thing is this started happening at home and in the office around the same time last week so I figured it might be a 1.1 bug (I had just upgraded from 1.0). But after having changed back to 1.0 and the problem not going away I am wondering if something weird is happening on the server side (am using Yahoo! mail, so a lot of other ppl should have this problem, too). I can see how this is a tough one to reproduce for you guys as this has never been an issue for me until now. Maybe you can give it another shot. This is so bad that I will soon have to stop using mozilla mail :-( Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020827
