BuildID: 2001112522
I am using mozilla for my mail, I have been successfuly using mozilla or its
descendents(Netscape 6) for my mail for quite some time. It worked pretty well
although it was slow. Now when i installed this version of mozilla(i havent used
mozilla for mail for quite a while), I can't delete any message. Any time i try
to delete any message i get the warning pop up that says
"The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded:{TRYCREATE} UID
COPY failed: No such destination Mailbox"
But the mailbox exists. Since it says the mailbox doesn't exist i try to create
a new Mailbox with that name(Trash). The create fails(which is expected) saying
the folder exists(it does exist). Now i try to delete the existing Trash folder.
As soon as i select the "Trash" folder i get an pop up window that says
"The current command didnot succeed: The mail server responded: SELECT failed:
Can't openmailbox Trash: no such mailbox."
These are two conflicting statements. one says that the Trash folder exists. One
says it doesn't.
And as a result of this i can't delete any mails from my INBOX when i select
"Move it to trash folder" When i delete messages in preferences.
I can delete messages when i select "Remove tham immidiately".
Let me know if you need any more info.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.I don't know how to reproduce it for you. It is happening to me though. and it
might not be reproducible. I am not sure. It does happen to me all the time now.

I cant delete messages too.
If delete a message (move to trash enabled) the message is sent to trash in the
mozilla imap folders. It also appears on the trash folder on the imap server
(can check it with their imap web-interface) but it never gets removed from the
original folder on the imap server.
The same problem occurs when im moving messages from one folder to another:
In the netscape folders everything seems fine, but on the server it is like a
copy. The original message doesn't get deletet resulting in two identical
messages. A strange thing is that even if I restart mozilla 'the old message'
doesn't reappear in mozilla though it is still on the imap server.

Adding a "Me too" to this bug, but on Mac OS X using build 2002041712 (which I
believe is the 1.0RC1 build).
I'm connecting to an Exchange 5.5 server using IMAP, and when I try to delete a
message in a subfolder, I get "The current command did not succeed. The mail
server responded: [TRYCREATE] The requested item could not be found."
The item in question resides in a sub-folder on the Exchange server. The folder
is not set up for offline use, and under the Sharing tab in the folder's
Properties (in Mozilla) it's set up as type "Personal Folder" and is not shared.
My permissions are "Full Control".
Let me know if I can provide more info.

Tried it on Windows with the same Exchange server (5.5 SP4, if it matters), and
saw the same error message, so someone should change the bug to All platforms
All OSes.
I have a similar problem.
I use IMAP to collect my email from one of my ISPs.
(1) Server Setting: "When I delete a message, Mark it as Deleted"
(2) Mark an email to delete.
(3) Header marked with a red cross as expected.
(4) While in the same folder, do "File | Compact Folders"
(5) Red cross on header disappears. Message not deleted!
Expected: the message to be deleted permanently.
Note that:
(a) This happens with Mozilla 0.9.9 and 1.0rc1 (build 2002042208 for Linux i686)
with a particular ISP imap server. It works for two other IMAP servers
that I use. (I am asking the ISP to provide me with more info about their
server, but they seem reluctant...)
(b) For the server which has this problem with Mozilla, the same "Compact
Folders" operation works in Netscape 4.x works.
(c) "Move to Trash Folder" option works. (ie server setting: "move to trash
folder", pick message to be deleted, and then File | Empty Trash".
If this problem is assigned and is being investigated, I can provide a test mail
account on the server.

More info on comment 5:
The server is running wu-imapd on Solaris 8.

I'd like to add that the situation previously described by Derek Lee happens to
me, too, using RC1, RC2 and RC3.
The server is UW-IMAP, with a patch to make it work with qmail "maildir" format
mailboxes.
To investigate a bit, I ran a network traffic sniffer: it appears that Mozilla
isn't sending anything over the wire when the message is deleted.
If I expunge then the command is indeed sent, but since the message was never
deleted is returns back to its previous status.
I might mention that this behavior appears when marking messages as "read", too,
although I have never tried to reproduce this in a consistent manner.
I may also provide a test account on the server (I'm the mailadmin in this case).
Thanx,
Mauro

I experience the problem as described by Derek, but on a Windows 98/Me PC. I had
the problem with Mozilla 0.9.8, 0.9.9, 1.0RC1, 1.0RC2 and 1.0 (2002053012). I
don't know what the sever is ; it announces itself as * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1
X-NETSCAPE LOGIN-REFERRALS AUTH=LOGIN] imap2-2.free.fr IMAP4rev1 2001.315/Proxad
at Sun, 16 Jun 2002 12:50:51 +0200 (CEST).
By looking at Mozilla's log, I could see that there is _no command sent_ to the
server when the message is deleted.
The problem seems server specific: I can delete messages on a Cyrus IMAP server
I also use.

The problem definitely is server specific: I too have no problems whatsoever
deleting messages from other IMAP servers.
As an added comment, I'd like to point out that selecting a different way to
delete messages works perfectly, i.e. if I choose "Move it to Trash folder"
instead of "Remove it immediately" the action is actually performed. Then
issuing a "delete all" and "compact folder" on Trash (a.k.a. "Empty Trash")
does what I needed to in the first place.
This could be thought of as a workaround, I guess.

Using Moz 1.0 Build 2002053012 on Win95B with ipSwitch iMail 7.10 IMAP server.
I can delete messages by moving to IMAP trash and then emptying trash. But if a
SHIFT+DELETE to bypass trash the message is removed but when I leave the folder
and come back to it, the message is back.

I think part of the problem is that Mozilla is assuming there's a folder called
"Trash" that is used for trash. On some mail servers the trash folder is called
something else (e.g., on Microsoft Exchange it's called "Deleted Items" in
English). See bug 118525.

I can confirm UW behavior (I'm using the same provider as #9), and I can confirm
that everything works on cyrus on another server. I'm using M 1.1a on Linux 2.4.
What I saw from network dump:
- Trash isn't selectable, which is why 'Move to Trash' fail I think.
- 'Mark as deleted' show ui deleted mark but doesn't send any command, and a
'Get Messages' removes the deleted ui mark.
- 'Delete Immediately' remove the message from ui, but no command is send, and a
'Get Messages' redisplays it and believe there's new mail.
HOWEVER, filter's move works perfectly and ui move works sometimes (I didn't
found why or when)
Network log show that filter's move is doing:
x uid store y +FLAGS (\Deleted)
The message isn't deleted, but isn't shown anymore (imp webmail shows it as
deleted, pop can see it)
Then the next expunge deletes it properly (imp and pop cannot see it)
I hope it'll help, this bug is really annoying...
And I didn't trace folders deletion yet, but I think the problem is similar.

Ok, so here's my folder delete analysis for UW
Mozilla does a RENAME command to trash and it works, however this folder is
never removed, so if I try to trash another folder with the same name it fails...
If I telnet manually, I can see the DELETE command works perfectly, so Mozilla
should use it...
However, deleted folders keep showing in the folders list, even after a restart
or subscribe/refresh, they only disappear when I desubscribe them, then do a
refresh.

More info on Comment 1:
Moving messages from one folder to another folder
makes a copy of the message in the destination folder, but does not delete the
original one. I have just noticed that this problem does not occur when the
message has an *attachment*. Presumably this is connected to the fact that
Mozilla is forced to contact the mail server to download the attachment. (Fits
in with comments 8 and 9?)
More info on Comment 13:
I can confirm that the message filters move the messages properly.
But the drag-and-drop move on the UI suffers from the same problem.

I have the same problem as Derek comment #5.
Please fix this.

Can someone change the Platform and OS to "All" pls?
Looks like this has been observed on Windows and Linux machines as well as Solaris.
Comment 18•22 years ago

Some additions:
- the problem described by Derek comment #5 only occures when I DELETE one or
more messages MANUALLY.
- the FILTERS work, the filtered messages are marked for deletion and they are
deleted when "Compact folder" (although they should be deleted imediatelly)
- moving ONE message to another folder results in the behavior described in
comment #5
- moving a selection of more than one message will correctly move the messages,
without leaving ghost messages in the original folder.
Seems like differet commands are used for drag-and-drop of one message and a
selection of multiple messages. The last one WORKS, please replicate the
behaviour in all message moving actions, including filters.
I hope this helps.
