Details

[This problem is probably specific to X windows. I use regular twm.] When a user selects File -> Open Web Location, having already used some standard method (eg mouse drag) to get a desired URL into the X-windows cut'n'paste buffer, I think they should be able to paste (middle-button-click) that URL into the Dialog box then hit enter to go to that URL. With Mozilla, what happens is the paste action INSERTS the pasted text rather than replacing the default URL. In Netscape this issue is handled with a "Clear" button, so the user can first Clear the URL window, then click to paste in the desired URL. But Mozilla has removed this Clear button. I suggest reinstating the Clear button, and/or making paste remove the default URL.
There was a long discussion about this in the past (people who want to add parts of URLs versus replacing URLs). But I can't find the bug. A simple workaround is to copy the URL and simply middle-click somewhere where you wouldn't expect something else to happen (like empty space on a webpage). This opens the pasted URL.
The workaround is superb! Many thanks. What an excellent feature. I still think there should be a "Clear" button so the user can clear the URL window before pasting in their URL. (as in Netscape) (I agree that the desirable behaviour when the URL has not been cleared is a topic for debate.)
