When I perform the LDAP search using the dialog or when I use the LDAP for autocomplete I have to reenter the auth password every time. If I don't want to save the password - leave the checkbox unchecked, it opens the auth dialog every time I try to search for address. This is really annoying. I think that the password should be remebered for the session as it is remebered for example for POP3 authentication.
Taking; this problem should go away once we move to nsILDAPService.
OK, really taking this time.

The auth dialogue opens for me even if I do say to save the password. (Windows, Mac and solaris 1.1x+ builds (through 3b). Is the password manager incapable of handling ldap?
I have just installed 1.4RC1 onto a windows box and have come across the same problem. Our LDAP server for addresses on site is an Exchange 2000 server. The LDAP address server has been set-up to allow anonymous access for email address fields. When I partially enter an address in the address field, my typing is interrupted by a pop-up dialog asking me for the LDAP password. I tick the box for password manager to remember my entry and then press carriage return to supply the null password. Mozilla then displays the names returned from the LDAP query in the to field. The really annoying thing is that although I can see that Password Manager has stored this password, the next email that I send (in the same session) causes the LDAP password request pop-up again. Password Manager does not seem to work properly for the LDAP password dialog.
I am having the same problem...at first I thought that Mozilla cannot save a blank password (anonymous auth) and was trying to add a password to LDAP

Not sure, how to take an attention, but I can happily reproduce this with thunderbird-3.0-3.9.b4.fc12.x86_64 (or maybe its a duplicate of bug 378323?).
Flags: wanted-thunderbird3?
Whilst this would be desirable, the core issues to fix this are too great especially with the release coming soon. Patches welcome but they are unlikely to make Thunderbird 3.

In Windows 2000 continues to lose the password. Every time you compose a new message ... when you add a recipient from ldap is to re-enter the password
Have there been any updates to this bug at all since 2002? I've recently configured LDAP for Thunderbird, but found out that this bug significantly impedes email composition.
Yup very annoying, needs resolving ASAP.
I think this is fixed in general cause I saw it working in recent releases, but there is currently a regression tracked in bug 833971.
Mark, should we close this?
Flags: needinfo?(mbanner)
No, this is still a valid bug even when bug 833971 is fixed. iirc there's an issue where every time you open the compose window, you need to enter your password when autocompleting (assuming you're not saving it in the password manager).

Just found that the "Use Password Manager to remember this password." checkbox has been removed in bug 1676216. So password is always saved now.

If you have strong reason to want the checkbox back, I can change to use MsgAsyncPrompter.jsm. Close for now.
