Especially if I have many accounts, the SMTP setting will become a horror.
(1) It is very difficult to find, where is SMTP srtting and how to define it.
(2) SMTP entries in SMTP-list can spontanly dissapear or change theirselves or
double theirselves
(3) Correspondence between Mail-account and SMTP account is not correctly stored
and always missed
(4)SMTP passwords are also not always stored
(5) GUI is horrorful and unpleasant

This has been reported so many times in so many previous bugs for so many
releases of Mozilla that I fail to understand why this has not been fixed or a
work around found for it. Outlook handles this with no problem. So much for open
source responding faster.

I am experiencing the same. SMTP server settings seem to add blank entries and
when you try to send, uses the 'blank' entry to try and send mail even though I
set a default smtp. I had tried to set up two accounts, each server requiring
auth to send mail.
Regardless if I delete all the smtp servers and re-add, I get the same error.
As far as mozilla reports the transaction, it seems to 'think' the server (the
blank one) is not up or not configured (duh! :).
This error is very similar to one I used to get in the newsgroup setting of
Netscape 4.7x, where unless you set up the news servers in an exact way
(involving adding, deleting, then adding, then playing with 'set as default'...)
you got host not found errors or other errors.
I'm using a Linux 2.4.x machine.

Hi there, I experience the same problems with Mozilla 1.1beta. I've set up a wee web-page about that: (not the blank line) http://www.cn.stir.ac.uk/~bp1/mozilla_bug/ There are variations possible. :-( Sometimes after the start of mozilla I get 2 IDENTICAL entries. I can not delete one of them. If I enter a third identical entry I can delete the first 2. And so on. Very screwed up. The outgoing mail does not work at all. I get the error message which is shown as a screenshot on the web-page above. /Bernd
check out Bug 154453 to see how you can manually remove duplicate entries by
editing the prefs file

When I send a reply or new message, the messge is sent successfully, but then I
receive popup box saying the SMTP server is refusing the message. I then have
to click on don't save etc. to get back to email, very annoying. This is a new
bug, and I wonder if SBC has changed something in their SMTP servers.

Mail/News has a poorly designed SMTP user interface. This type of problem is
normally an enhancement, and would thus be of low priority to developers.
However, the bad design of the SMTP user interface is causing a number of users
to file spurious bugs. It is also resulting in a lot of grief (the magnitude of
which is not recognized, because it is dispersed between a number of different
bugs).
This is a problem with both Mozilla Mail/News and Thunderbird.
It remains a problem even in these, more recent versions:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113
Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (20040207)
Although no single SMTP bug has that many votes, the sum of votes for those bugs
partially or wholly dependent upon UI problems is rather large.
These bugs aren't really bugs, but are users who are mislead by the UI:
bug 228643
- Outgoing Server settings ignore the default
bug 170089
- default server value not being used to send mail. Mail cannot be sent.
bug 222064
- don't remember the updated default SMTP server. Can't use more then one SMTP
server
These bugs all mention or are in part due to bad UI design:
bug 202468
- 3 votes - Simpler, more consolidated UI for SMTP server settings
bug 52384
- 26 votes - difficult to define multiple smtp servers and
quickly/automatically switch between them
bug 154453
- 2 votes - SMTP setting dialog totally corrupted
bug 218518 comment 4 and comment 5
- unable to select alternate SMTP server in Account Settings
bug 226017
- Should try other SMTP servers when default doesn't work
Note that all of these bugs can't simply be marked closed and consolidated into
one bug (most contain more than one issue with the way SMTP servers are entered
& organized).
However, I suggest that the UI aspects of these bugs be consolidated into bug
202468 .
Let's all vote for it, and hopefully get some work done on this UI!
Andy
I have two SMTP servers in "Outgoing Server"->Advanced, and it lists them both.
(localhost:2525 and localhost:25, one of them is port-forwarded from another
machine.) However, when I go to "Advanced Account Settings" for an account,
then to the "SMTP" tab, I only have "localhost:2525" available in the pull-down box.
This is Mozilla 1.7a Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040311

I would recommend to close this bug. I don't see any useful information. See all
the other bugs from comment 8.

I recommend NOT to close this bug but solve the problem once and for all.
The settings for multiple accounts usind different SMTP accounts (and on the
same server where necessary) is totaly broken in Mozilla Mail for an eternity.
This IS CRITICAL!
(By the way the only reason while I still need to stick to Evolution.)
Why can there not be a simple setup for accounts that includes
* settings for an account-specific POP3 server (incl. user name, password, etc.)
with an intelligently preset default of the POP3 used before or the local mail
server or something like that, if you will
* settings for an account-specific SMTP server (incl. user name, password,
etc.), again with intelligently preset default values
* settings for an account-specific IMAP server (incl. ...)
* settings for account-specific user's real name, institution, signature etc.
* settings for account-specific handling of mail download/sending (e.g.
delete/don't delete mail after fetching successfully)
Please take a look at all the Windows, Linux and-what-not email clients that
manage to solve this problem nicely for years (Pegasus Mail, Evolution, KMail, ...)
Kind regards
Andreas

I still see these in 2004090105 build on WinXP
(2) SMTP entries in SMTP-list can spontanly dissapear or change theirselves or
double theirselves
(5) GUI is horrorful and unpleasant.
About (2), the smtp server, name become empty..
About (5), the dialog does not show all the UI element in it.
