Steps to reproduce:

I have one mailbox with quite a few emails (11700 in the inbox), the local folders I don't quite use and some RSS news feed (9 configured).

I have around 25 folders in my mailbox, half of them in the inbox, the others at the root. One of these folder is huge and has almost 65000 short mails (SMS backups)

I also observe this with another profile with an mailbox with fewer emails.

Scrolling over the folder view induces high CPU usage (I can reach 50% by stressing it a bit, and I hear the CPU computing) and if I set the CPU to powersave mode, the scrolling is sluggish. I would not know how many times per second the list is redrawn, probably around 4-5, definitely under 10. This happens either by scrolling with the touchpad or the touchscreen.
Scrolling the mails in the inbox is faster.

In both profiles, outside troubleshot mode, hovering the list is also very sluggish, the gray marking which folder is hovered does not keep up. This does not happen in troubleshot mode though.

My CPU is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8365U CPU, my RAM is composed of DDR4 SODIMM sticks running at 2400 MT/s.

I'm running an updated openSUSE Tumbleweed (GNU/Linux).

I'm a web developer, happy to profile anything if needed. Sending video captures is impractical since it would display the content of my mailbox but if there is a mailbox I can log into for benchmarking, I would be glad to as well.

Steps:

  1. Run Thunderbird in troubleshot mode

  2. scroll the folders

  3. Run Thunderbird normally

  4. scroll the folders view

  5. hover the folders view

Actual results:

  1. the scroll induces high CPU usage / is laggy / sluggish
  2. hovering induces high CPU usage / is laggy / sluggish

Expected results:

I wouldn't expect computation to take place when scrolling or hovering this list. This should be smooth.

There are a number of such bug reports https://mzl.la/3Hw6gJz.
Most are Mac reports, but ultimately this is likely not to get fixed in version 91, as it depends on the blocker mentioned in Bug 1697999 - Slow, choppy scrolling in folder pane on Mac
