change spam control UI, per jglick (And Mail.app) ideas and screenshots coming.

I'm not 100% sure about the "show junk column" checkbox.

I was thinking, if we showed them the image in #2, without the "show junk column" check box, there would be no difference between the "Off" and "Train" settings (all items unchecked and disabled). My concern was how would users know what "training" mode was really doing? Hence, the checkbox, (display junk mail column). How about Example 2 instead? This has a short description of what the diff modes are, so its more clear what training is doing (identifying only). Or, we could take a slightly diff approach, similar to apple, with 4 settings: Off, Train (identify only), Auto (move to junk folder with option to auto empty), custom (create your own filter).

seth: the two paragraphs are still way too long. please remove them. If people want to know what they are, they can click the big help button. if people want to hide the junkmail column, they can use the standard widget selector. Is it impossible for the filter to learn about messages if something moves them and the user later changes their markings? I can't tell from Custom/Train how they relate. Can someone please explain (in English) what happens when you switch from "Train" to "Custom"?

Two nits: 1. Why did the window open with the width of the screen? (Although removing the help text might resolve this) 2. Why is this not a page in account settings? Or at least a <dialog>?

jglick: I'm starting to see the light about making the junk button and column be per UI. say I have an account that gets no junk mail. why pay the price for the junk mail UI? But i might have another account that gets a lot of junk mail. right now the button and column are global. my gut tells me that for the short term, thought, we could leave it as global, as everyone gets spam.

With regards to the UI screenshots: Are 'training' and 'custom' really 2 different states? If I have it moving junk mail to folders, does it stop learning? That's what the UI implies. Why not just have a checkbox [x] Enable junk mail control and then the various options underneath. I also like the way that Mail.app treats the junk mail control like just another filter.

as suggested in comment 1 and comment 7, how about using the filter to control where junk mail goes? pretend it is a header ... this would let users do things like delete junk from specific senders. i don't see the purpose of two seperate dialogs that do something so similar when they could so easily be merged.

Can this be closed with WONTFIX? Both TB and SM have gone a different route, regarding UI for Spam filters

sorry for the spam. making bugzilla reflect reality as I'm not working on these bugs. filter on FOOBARCHEESE to remove these in bulk.
