Tested on POP3, IMAP can be affected by this too perhaps.
If your mail server password is changed, and you have mailbox password stored in
password manager, login will fail with message "PASS command did not succeed".
After you hit OK, mozilla tries to log in again in several second.
Consequences:
- You have to go to password manager to delete mailbox account password.
- You have just aproximately 5 seconds to start password manager, after this
time new error box appears.
- Your account can be blocked by server after X unsuccessful logins, if such
policy is set up on server. This is a case at least with exchnge server and NT
domain. - it is really probable that your account is locked out while you are
trying to start password manager to delete the password. This is really annoying.
Correct behaviour:
If password does not work, unsave(delete) password in password manager and ask
for new one (or ask user if he wants to enter new password).
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Setup POP3 account, set automatic retrievial of messages at startup
2. Get mail, save password, close MailNews
3. Change password for account
4. Start MailNews again
Bug 126180 (see comment #9) is close to this one (anyway not a DUP, since this
one deal only with logic, while 126180 requires UI change to Account manager).

Yeah, I see this with IMAP; the error message is different but the other
symptoms are identical.
This seems to be a duplicate of bug 182362.
