I've removed the assertion, but the hang still occurs. This looks like a fine example of the netlib problems I've been seeing recently.

Seems like the nsHTMLContentSink::nsDoneLoadingScript is not conveying the onStopBinding to the parser?

So I've found the problem, and low and behold it's yet *another* special case of interaction between JS/DOM/Parser. Since this is a tricky issue, I'm not going to checkin the fix until after I've had more time to test. Call me if you want to know the gory details.
