The thread pane's context menu has a Mark submenu which includes a few items that don't strictly belong here. The 'context' for these menu actions is the selected group of messages. However, these items: Mark Thread as Read Mark As Read by Date... Mark All Read are applied to different contexts: for the first action, the thread(s) containing the messages; and the other two actions are applied to the folder at large. Additionally, Watch Thread/Ignore Thread are not available on any context menu (meaning at least one message from the thread needs to be loaded before it can be ignored -- bug 223280). My suggestion is to break these items out of the context>Mark submenu. First of all: Mark Folder Read is already on the folderpane context menu; I would add Mark Folder Read by Date... to that menu. (Perhaps a Mark submenu would be appropriate on this menu.) My preference for the menu reorg would be to remove the items entirely from the threadpane context menu, relocating MarkByDate as noted above, and adding a new context menu that only appears when right-clicking IN THE THREAD COLUMN. This menu would contain Mark Thread as Read, Ignore Thread, Watch Thread, Select Message in Thread (which function is available as Shift+Ctrl+A). I assume, however, that there would be little support for that path. As an alternate, I suggest the context menu get new subitems: ... Mark > [mark submenu without the thread/folder items] ----------------------------- Thread > Mark Thread as Read Ignore Thread Watch Thread Select Messages in Thread Folder > Mark All Read Mark Read by Date... ----------------------------- Save As... ... If two new submenus were too much, these six items could be combined into a single submenu -- "Folder/Thread"? "Meta"? In all of these instances, I would either not display, or disable, the thread-related items if the folder view is flat (per bug 79629).
I don't see a problem with moving those folder-based operations from the message and thread pane context menus to the folder pane context menu.

I can see there could be some benefit to this arrangement but in terms of the churn vs. user experience improvement I'm not sure this change is great enough to put through. This is a good suggestion so I don't want to lose it, however I think I have to mark this wontfix as I'm not going to take this on.
