entries in textfields can't `keep-up'

I am using the mozilla available in debian-frozen under linux; it is an m12
release, though the silly build-id claims to be from mid-august. It is known to
be wrong.
While filling out html forms, the address bar, the file|open web location, and
probably other text entry boxes, the boxes can't update the display fast enough
to show what is happening.
To reproduce, click in the address bar, and hold down a key, such as "a" --
watch as the caret zips across the field, but does not print the 'a's right on
schedule. Notice how the backspace key handles this also -- the caret zips left,
but the 'a's are not removed from screen, until releasing the backspace key.
This could be related to bug 23986; that occured on an NT machine though, so I
was reluctant to mess with that entry.
Thanks! :)

sarnold@willamette.edu, from other reports the Mozilla you got from
debian-frozen must be the M12 binary; yes, the Build ID is known to be wrong.
I spent a bit of time using Mozilla on Linux, with a 2000-01-20 build,
and saw no such symptoms... this has probably been fixed.
Could you please check this with M13 when it is available, which should be
within a week or so, and report back here? Thanks.

this is being discussed in bug 2888. it would be nice if you could add your
comments on type-in performance on linux to that bug -- check out
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/performance.html for the kind of
information that would be useful to add to a performance bug report. it would
be great to get some data comparing Mozilla to say, Netscape 4.x.
2888 is also on the performance laundry list -- see
http://www.mozilla.org/performance/laundry-list.html

Thanks, sarnold@willamette.edu, the info you added to bug 2888 is really
useful because it zeros right in on the problem with no extraneous factors.
Are you interested in trying to use a profiling tool?
There is a Debian package for M13 at
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/release-notes/
if you are interested in comparing it to M12 to see if anything has improved.
Verifying as DUP.

It would be fun to try to profile this thing, but hyatt's new stuff recently has
made this bug a thing of the past.... :) where can I find some general profiling
info so in the future if the need should arise I can help out a bit more quickly? :)
Thanks sidr! (especially for bug report 24353 -- to confirm that I wasn't
screwing up the build-ids... :)

There is some information about profiling Mozilla on the page at
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/performance.html that you might be able
to make use of. Not something I've done personally, but you can ask
for help on IRC channel #mozilla or at news:netscape.public.mozilla.performance
if you have questions.
