User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 I'm updating an extension (drag&drop of a ".xpi" file from my harddisk onto FireFox). FireFox now displays: << A web site is requesting permission to install the following item: MozillaFirefox_view_rendered_... Unsigned From: file:///c:/documents%20and%20Settings/ >> So, what are the problems ? 1) The ".xpi" filename is not fully displayed (it cuts before the end and shows "..."). I can't see the whole filename. There's no tooltip, there's no way to scroll, there's no way to resize the window. FireFox should always show the complete filename. That's a security problem (a long filename allow spoofing). 2) The "from" path is not fully displayed (it cuts before the end without even showing "..."). I can't see the whole path. There's no tooltip, there's no way to scroll, there's no way to resize the window. FireFox should show the complete path. That's a security problem (a long path allow spoofing). 3) The real name of the extension is not displayed. FireFox should show the true name of the extension (the one inside the ".rdf" file). The filename is not enough. The filename has not enough meaning (some downloaded extensions have dumb names like "xxx.xpi" or "extension.xpi", or have short names like "vrs.xpi"). 4) FireFox should also display the version number (from the ".rdf" file) of the extension being installed. 5) FireFox should warn if the extension is already installed. FireFox should tell the difference between a brand new added extension and an extension being updated. 6) When updating an extension, FireFox should display the version number of the already installed extension and the version number of the extension being installed ("you already have version 1.2.3 or the XXXX extension and you are about to install version 1.2.4"). 7) FireFox should warn the user when something looks wrong. - If you try to install version "1.2.3" but version "1.2.4" is already installed, FireFox should warn about it ("this extension seems older than the one already installed"). The user will be allowed to do so (sometimes, you really need to downgrade a buggy extension) but he will be warned. - If you try to install version "1.2.3" and version "1.2.3" is already installed, Firefox should also warn about it ("this extension seems to be exactly the same than the one already installed"). The user will be allowed to do so (sometimes, you really need to install again a buggy extension) but he will be warned. 8) FireFox should display the extension's icon (the one inside the ".xpi") and not a stock icon. Thanks. Reproducible: Always
First, please file separate issues as separate bugs. 1- When the dialog is triggered by "opening" an XPI file it's just the name of the file, which you can see in the "From" field, and which doesn't help much anyways. 2- It's scrollable. If you have any specific suggestions (tooltip or something like that), please file it in a separate bug. 3/4/5/6/7- Keep in mind that the dialog is typically shown when an installation is triggered from a page or when you click a link to a file with xpi's content type. Firefox (correctly) asks *before* downloading the file. What you're asking for is a advanced dialog in case when the XPI is available locally. While that makes sense to me, I'm not sure if it's going to be implemented in Firefox itself (do many people install extensions from their HDs?). If I understood you correctly, please update the summary of the bug to indicate that you're talking about installations from a local file and file other issues separately. 8- if that's not about local case only, there's a bug open about it.
This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it. If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved. Thank you for your help in this matter. The latest beta releases can be obtained from: Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/ Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/releases/1.5beta1.html Seamonkey: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
This bug is really to big for a single bug. Please file individual specific bugs. As it happens, most of these issues may not get fixed, since the dialog you are talking about is a general security warning and is not just for extensions, but can apply to plugins and firefox patches.
