Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5 Build Identifier: Version 1.5 (20051201) After migrating email/settings from Outlook 2003 on Windows XP, Thunderbird has munged all HTML emails. Either they are displayed as text-only, and all the tags are displayed, or they are not displayed at all but are listed as an attachment (i.e. part 1.1) and require specifying some program to display the HTML mail. Not the greatest introduction for someone considering switching email clients. Reproducible: Didn't try
Related to/duplicate of bug 250878 or Core bug 214478 -> Core bug 155537? Maybe Core bug 199298 and bug 270630 have returned?
What happens is that, for text plain messages, outlook stores both a text/plain and an html version, but when it's imported, only the HTML body and the text/plain content headers make it through. Bug 155537 listed above also is similar, in that HTML emails received from MS have contained a null Content-type. I'm not sure that this is actually a duplicate, since this is something that occurs on import. This really should be investigated as it's a serious problem. I wouldn't care if I could get my outlook messages via exchange server protocol (imap and pop seem to be disabled on our server now), but since I have to import, this matters to me.
Core bug 155537 is not related per mcow@well.com. Core bug 155537 specifically relates to "RECEIVED" messages with a content-type null. Here's the text from there which should be here, slightly revised: ----------------------------------------------------------------- When importing mail from Outlook 2003, TB gets Content-Type: text/plain, yet the body clearly has html all over inside. As an end result, this results in an HTML email being unreadable in TB. The issue seems to be various points from the source of the import. If the Content-Type is incorrect, which is the case with my import, then is it TB's job to rewrite the Content-Type header line to text/html when it detects html email? From a "right thing to do", the source of the problem should be corrected. If this is a TB import issue, then it should be handled there. If it's an issue with what we receive from Outlook, then we all know that the liklihood of that is 296520562058620856 to one against. As such, for a usability/image-of-Thunderbird standpoint, this might want to be converted to an enhancement request for TB to detect HTML and render appropriately, even if the content-type is text/plain or null. This then becomes a battle over doing things the right way, or having the right output. I can't choose "confirm" so someone else will have to confirm this bug.
Problem does occur in Thunderbird 1.5.
I also retested at 1.5 and it doesn't happen. It wasn't a clean test, because before, exchange was set to use an http gateway under advanced, and I was using personal folders. I don't have access to revert/retest the old way. Ross, have you retried? -Josh
I am transitioning from Outlook 2003, SP 1, to Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 (20060516). I experience trouble that is described by 323184 and 250878. In other words, I imported thousands of email into Thunderbird, deleted them from Outlook, saw many that were next to unreadable. Now I'm sad. But looking at bugzilla, the players seem to think of the trouble as uncorroborated, and no work targeting this issue is being attempted (?!). So I write to notify you that this trouble is still present in sw very recently released. And I'm still sad. Can the imported emails be filtered to restore their proper rendering?
I'm seeing this bug when importing from Outlook 2003 into TB 1.5.0.5. For all imported HTML messages, every mention of a Content-Type field in the message's source looks like this: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed
Current owner Scott MacGregor hasn't commented since it was reopened 2+ months ago. Scott, any thoughts? Hand off to someone else if it makes sense? Thanks, John Ruckstuhl
I imported from Outlook (LookOut!) 2003 into TB 1.5.0.9 and have this problem. Please don't make me go back to LookOut.
To comment posters who troubled with MS Outlook 2003: If you still have Outlook 2003 mail, and you have Outlook Express, check difference between next cases by mail source compare of the mail. Case-1) Outlook 2003 -> Tb Case-2) Outlook 2003 -> Outlook Express -> Tb (Test with new profile, a dummy POP3 account of "No Global Inbox", please.) Case-2 is possibly a workaround for next 2 types of problem ; (A)Outlook 2003's fault, and (B)Tb's fault. Note: When Windows Vista, Windows Mail instead of Outlook Express, and I saw a forum thread says "Unable to import from Windows Mail by TB". So different approach from case-2 is required when Windows Vista. See following page. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2863771&sid=81c6c291d6e3154cd2187701e7ae3223
See Bug 219181 for troubles with Outlook in the past, and see Bug 219181 Comment #15 for workaround of "import thru Outlook Express".
confirmed for new thunderbird install (2.0.0.12) from Outlook 2003. P.S. workaround with Outlook express not possible on my machine. Would be nice if one could somehow 'change' the text/plain headers somehow??
This is very probable dupe of bug 250878
Yes, looks like a dupe.
