Scott Putterman said in a recent posting to mozilla-mail-news that the mail
window is supposed to scroll automatically to the first new message. This has
never worked for me: when I bring up the mail/news window, the thread pane is
scrolled down to some random point, but still not far enough down to see the
first unread message; and the first unread message is not selected. So I still
have to scroll down to find the first unread message, then click on it.
This is a feature that I would really, really like (it would help usability
quite a bit).
Incidentally, in the prefs window, "Remember the last selected message" is on;
if I try to uncheck it, then then quit and restart, the mail window this time
comes up scrolled to the top (rather than partway down), but if I bring up the
prefs window again, the pref is still checked.

this works for me. We still have the problem where sometimes that message is
slightly offscreen, but that is a different bug assigned to someone else, I
think.

I'm still seeing the message offscreen most of the time, and on startup mozilla
is usually at the top of the thread pane, not at the first unread or (as it
should be according to the prefs) last selected.
Related to this: 4.x autoscrolls the thread pane as I delete or "next" through
messages, so I can almost always see the next few messages yet to be read.
Without this, reading mail is a lot slower because I can't notice that the next
message is spam or a duplicate and delete it, or that it's part of a thread I
haven't read yet so I want to skip over it, etc. I feel like I'm flying blind.

Viewing the prefs: I can't find anywhere where it says that it should start at
the first unread (though this seems like a good idea, and I'd sure like it).
What it DOES say is that it should remember (I assume this means start at) the
last selected message, which will probably be the last message before the first
unread one. I'd prefer first unread, but either one would be much better than
the first message in the folder.

Hrm, does this work? Do any of the pieces work? Is there a js method for
scrolling/zooming the threadpane to a specific message? Is this All/All?

It actually scrolls to the first new message, not first unread. If there are no
new messages in the folder then it will go to the top. I'm removing the
nsbeta3+ for reconsideration since I think scrolling to the first new actually
works.

Currently, one has to hit "Get Msg" and then pull the scrollbar down to see the
list of new messages.
NOTE: On an autocheck, the pane should NOT scroll down, since user may be
involved with other tasks (viewing old messages in inbox).
In either event, I don't think it should auto-display an unread message, since
it would then be marked as READ. The top pain should scroll down, however, so
that the bold, unread messages are easy to click on.

Didn't Seth fix this recently?

We actually scroll to the first new message and it's been doing it for a while
(Seth fixed the regression caused by the mail perf landing). So I think this
can be marked WFM if people are willing to live with first new message or won't
fix if it needs to be first unread.

First new message sounds great. That's probably better than first unread
anyway.

Hmm... using apr18 commercial trunk build, I see we do scroll down to first new
message but we dont select it. Correct or no?
