It's under the star in the location bar where your mouse is supposed to be after clicking the star; this might be the thought behind this. Clicking the star is the most important way to bookmark a site in Firefox 3. So you want different places for the pop-up?

I was using the menu- maybe popup should then appear at the beginning of the URL bar? This would be near the menu entry?
what would be the purpose of having the dialog open in different locations depending from where you invoked it?
If you put it like this- none. But it would make the UI usable in my use case. As it is, the as-is behaviour is unexpected.
In 2.0.0.x a small window pops up in the middle of the screen. It's not associated, location wise, with anything at all. Was that usable? Please explain what your use case is. Is it an accessibility issue? Just trying to understand why you consider this broken.
Thought I had made the use clear in initial posting. I'm usually using Bookmarks/Bookmark this page. What happens then is visible in attached screenshot. problem is that at my 24" monitor I'm not even aware of a popup appearing at the far right end of the screen while the bookmarks menu is on the left side. All other dialogs/popups I'm aware of appear somewhere middle or leftish- only the bookmarks one not. I just think it's bad UI design for things to appear at seemingly random places (which it is when staring from bookmarks menu). If wont fix, please close. Thanks, Andi
I agree with Andreas, I'm with a 24" monitor too and it's pretty annoying to see a popup at the right end of FF when you click the Bookmarks menu item in the left end. This is an example of breaking something that was working, IMO.

Clicking the > star is the most important way to bookmark a site in Firefox 3. > So you want different places for the pop-up? This is the first time I knew the purpose of that star except for an indicator of a bookmarked site! It's a pretty bad "me-too" design after IE. IE7 does always show the dialog at the center of the window regardless of which part you clicked, the Favorites menu or the star icon.
I confirm this as a bug as you can't move the star in the customization menu right now...

To summarize- I believe this would be a good approach: 1) "bookmark this" from the menu should open the bookmarks dialog near the menu- where also the mouse would be in the typical use case 2) "bookmark this" via the star should open the bookmarks dialog near the star (where it always appears right now) 3) Using the star is not obvious but not an issue for me as I'm not using it. it might be worth discussing if the start should also popup the dialog, but I believe not doing so is fine as this can be done by clicking twice. Comment 10 should probably be opened as separate issue.
Whiteboard: wontfix?
IMO this is a valid complaint, and a regression from branch. At the very least we should allow a way to customize things so that the contextual menu can be placed at a spot of the user's choosing, whether that's by toolbar customization, userchrome, etc.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h". In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows: Tools | Message Filters Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New" Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h Change the action to "Delete Message". Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top. Click OK. Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter. Gerv

Whether the user use the menu or star to bookmark a page, the result of the interaction should be consistent, which is currently open the bookmark pop-up under the star. Making the pop-up appear in different locations might confuse the user. And my understanding of opening the pop-up window under the star is a way to increase the discoverability of the star, which is kind of a shortcut to bookmark, cause it's one click short than using the menu. Marking this bug wonfix. Whether provide toolbar customization for the star is another question.
