More and more people have difficulty with SMTP settings on laptop, because of restrictions according to the ISP used.
I think it would be very very handy to have a way to autoconfigure smtp server.
It would be beatiful that at the first send action in the session, Thunderbird could try to use first SMTP1, then, if this fails, SMTP2 and go on. Once found a working SMTP in user's list, this should be used for the whole session.
Of course there may be different ways to do it: I think that the best and easier way is to use the SMTP list in "Account settings".
Reproducible: Always
