User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14 Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.14 (20080421) I was trying to debug a problem with 'tags'. In the process I wanted to restore the original tag list, to 'factory' defaults. In a vain attempt I'd hoped if I deleted all tags, it would re-initialize the tag list to the default entries...*nope*. So, admittedly it could be argued, it's a feature -- not being able to return to the defaults, but ... eh...I think it's design oversight (or flaw). Even if having an empty Tag list is a valid 'feature', and it is desired not to revert to the default in such cases, there should still be a button to revert to the default list. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Make changes in your tag list...& forget what original ones were 2. Decide your tag list sucks and want to reset the list back to the 3. default items and colors. Actual Results: You are screwed. Expected Results: I press the 'Defaults' button on the 'Tags' pane and the initial values are filled in again.... I think there is some buggyness in tags -- was going to write a bug. I had custom tag colors on all but one of the default tag colors and had 1 additional tag added. But it seemed to be the case that coloring was broken -- when I would set a tag, the color of the message would not change -- *EXCEPT* for the one tag that still had its default color. I am not sure how to repeat the setup -- was trying to do that by restoring initial tags and see if that changed anything or if something else was causing the problem. That's when I got stuck in "this" state (where's my defaults!)... So if whoever takes this finds out that the custom colors or adding a custom category w/a color doesn't color the messages (I'm using IMAP, but I can't see how that should make a difference), they might want to update this bug with that information and either open a new bug for that problem or append it to this bug -- as the two tasks (adding ability to reset default Tag values and fixing custom coloring)...though that would be a bit irregular. It's just that the non-working coloring was what I was *going* to report...but now I can't really verify how to reproduce it or if it only happens on custom colors for tags or if it happens because I added an additional, user-defined tag. Uh..g.. *sigh*. If it's the color going away prob, that's more serious -- I'd consider that a major feature broken. But if that isn't easily reproduced, then I'd like to reduce the severity of this bug down to 'normal' (not an RFE), since resetting to default should really have been designed-in in the first place -- or there should be 'some' justification for why an empty 'Tag' list is a useful feature -- and doesn't initiate a 'reset' to the default set. Thanks, & sorry for the oddness of this 'incident' report...oh wait, this isn't MS, I can actually call it a bug report...*cough*...:-) -linda
Attached file tags 1-5 as exported with mailtweak (deleted) —
First these are 2 things, so let's keep them separated. -default tags (1-5) it could pass as bug or maybe feature request, not sure for now let's see a workaround: *get mailtweak extension (0.16 ...) http://mailtweak.mozdev.org/installation.html *tools/addons/mailtweak options *scroll to "tag tools" and check *ok, ok .. *options/display/ tags will present more refined instruments *import the xml I attach here (for default 1-5) *further use for edit, backups and alike ... 2. tag color misbehave That is a completely different thing. Try to reproduce those issues and get back If you need assistance in filling this separately, ask.
restore tags to defaults after deleting all tags doesn't seem to be a reasonable expectation. going with your last sentence "should still be a button to revert to the default list."

Summary: Doesn't seem to be anyway to reset tag defaults → Add button to reset tag defaults
i can see as a debug environment tool this would be useful, but otherwise I can't see a real user expectation that they delete all tags and then be able to get our canned list back. Perhaps ovidiu's comment 1 should be turned into a knowledge base/help article.
