User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.11) Gecko/2009060215 Firefox/3.0.11 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Despite me entering my passwrod correctly, and selecting the "remember this password" box, it fails to remember it and asks me what my password is each time I load mozilla firefox. Reproducible: Always
And yes, my password IS correct, because it loads my email messages. Mail: GMAIL

SO your issue is with Firefox, not thunderbird, right ?

The issue is with THUNDERBIRD. When i said FIREFOX, i meant THUNDERBIRD.
Alan can you tell us hat version of thunderbird ? Are you using the master password mechanism ? When you enter your password and that it is not saved do you see something in Tools->Error console ?
This is a duplicate of bug 121647 and possibly one or two other bugs. Assuming you're using gmail IMAP then it has been improved for Thunderbird 3 beta 3 and won't forget your password unless you want to change the password.
