They are all too close and indistinguishable - except the trash icon - thus easy to hit the wrong one. Either remove them as duplicates (at top already) or use clear icons as at the top of the client. Or let people configure them, but the default is not good now. Reproducible: Always

also in safe-mode? can you provide a screenshot?
We are removing duplicates in the toolbar in bug 474523. Marking this as duplicate.

This issue is not covered by bug 474523; replacing the text button with icon ones was part of bug 466025, though that bug is not very specific.
Yes, this is not a duplicate of bug 474523. Replacing the text-only buttons with icons isn't covered there or anywhere else; bug 466025 is a collection of ideas leading to an extension thus far, no work after January 2009 done there, and the issue of icon buttons can be handled separately here. Also, assuming that bug 465138 provides for a toolbar implementation of those buttons, the suggestion to pick between text or icons for the buttons could be realized. Reopening as RFE with summary adjusted, setting dependencies and confirming.

This bug is important ... unless the developers come to their senses about moving the buttons to the header in the first place (see starting from bug 474523 comment 28).

I'm not sure this is the right thing to do. Adding icons to the buttons would mean that the text would be pushed off-center in the button, making them look slightly less attractive and it would also make the header eat up even a bit more space, and since a lot of people find it slightly too big right now (judging from the discussion on the mailing list), I don't think it's a good idea to make it take up even more space.
I agree with comment #6 to the extent that having a text+icon appearance would increase the space problems already present in the header pane anyway. However, that's not asked for. In the optimum case, by making the header-pane buttons a true toolbar where bug 465138 converges to, the user can chose between text or icon (but not the "and" case).
Nit: Could someone correct the spelling in the subject: to --> too

(In reply to comment #7) > In the optimum case, by making the header-pane buttons a > true toolbar where bug 465138 converges to, the user can chose between text or > icon (but not the "and" case). I don't understand. Are you trying to recommend /excluding/ the "icons and text" option from customization options for the header-pane-toolbar-to-come? Please DON'T. Even in Thunderbird 2, I can select between three options: 1) symbols and text, 2) symbols, 3) text. As long as user can choose, space problems are not our problems - it all depends on your screen size, and on an 21inch screen space may not be an issue at all. Otherwise, my full support for this bug, icons are badly missed.
> (comment #9) Are you trying to recommend /excluding/ the "icons and > text" option from customization options for the header-pane-toolbar-to-come? That was my initial intention, but only for the header-button toolbar where we have limited space to either side. On the other hand, you are right that the user can be trusted to make that decision him/herself, thus not providing the text+icon option by implementing a special case may not be worth it. I'd still argue though that the default should be either text or icon, but not both. There is also bug 499410 comment #19 and following, suggesting to put the headers into their own grid box, thus not forcing the vertical space of the first heading to match the button height. This would indeed open the door for a vertically arranged text+icon option being available without space constraints.

With luck, we'll get this for free as part of bug 465138, however, if it were the last bug standing, we wouldn't block on it.
