Details
it only works on linux and solaris, should be enhanced for other unixes.
The LD_LIBRARY_PATH thing needs to be fixed.

This is an on-going project, so changes will be going in over the
life of 5.0 (i.e., it's not really "milestone-able"). Changed it
to M15 to keep people from bugging me about it.

resolved invalid. there is no real bug here. instead of a generic bug like
this, let's file specific bugs when we find them and take them one at a time.
