mac commercial build 2000-09-21-04-M18 - run search expected results: sidebar opens with list of results tested results: side bar remains closed (opening side bar reveals empty result field)
Keywords: smoketest
isn't this major/ blocker?
yes...I thought I set it as such...doing so now.
Severity: normal → blocker
Making this a P1 and "nsbeta3+".

Can someone explain to me why this is a blocker. Does it prevent further testing of a significant portion of the product? Is it something that prevents further development of a significant portion of the product? Will holding the tree closed help us get this problem solved faster? If the answer to any of these three questions is Y then we should leave it as a blocker. If not the severity should be lowered to critical or major.
Using win32 commercial build 2000-09-21-09 on win2k, type "thinkpad recovery" in url bar and hit "search" button, sidebar opens, but results are also empty. I smell some cross-platform screwiness somewhere here.
This seems to be that we are not getting any results back from google. If type in "netscape seamonkey" you get the dmoz results in sidebar but you don't get the google ones. If you just type something that will resolve to good it will not return the google results thus it is blank. Have not been able to test this on a mac yet to verify this is the problem on the mac.
the problem at least with my mac mozilla build is that the default search engine was set to something stupid like Amazon.com Video or some such nonsense. After setting a reasonable search engine it worked fine. Lowering severity and removing smoketest keyword.
Severity: blocker → normal
Keywords: smoketest
Was the default search engine set wrong or is it that the netscape default search engine is not getting the google data so it's not getting updated? This is important because if the default is getting set randomly it's very important to know.
brade and I had two different defaults. My question is why we're putting netscape in the content window and the derault in the sidebar. Shouldnt our defualt populate both locations?
PDT agrees P1, but we'd go PR3 without this fix. Marking rtm++ though since it's an RTM stopper.

sidebar is not failing, the sidebar is just fine. it opens and brings up the search panel. the problem is the default search engine on Mac builds.
Yes, on commercial build 2000-09-22-08-M18 the side bar opens, though it opens empty. yesterday it wouldn't open at all.
I don't think this is a problem with the default search engine. I think this might be a problem with netcenter. We are not getting the results from google and that is why they are not showing up. Throwing to RJC since he would know more

OK, if this is not the same problem I'm seeing in mozilla builds (a very lame list of search engines which doesn't even include google but has things like amazon.com video) then perhaps this should be moved to Bugscape and anew Mac only bug filed on this incorrect list of search engines (which do, btw, load results into the sidebar, if there are any results)
Asa, you should be aware that (on the Mac) Mozilla imports and uses all the OS's search files as well as the ones we include with the browser.
I'm marking this fixed as the original problem reported seems to be working. (Other problems, if they still remain, should be given their own bugs.)
