I suspect this would do better as an extension, although there are currently none that fill this exact niche. Two that might work, though, are Tag Toolbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4970) and TaQuilla (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/10905); TaQuilla goes one step beyond, automatically tagging messages according to their similarity to previously tagged messages (see its homepage at http://mesquilla.com/extensions/taquilla/ for details).
