(Reporter: Vincent.Boudry, Unassigned)
Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; fr; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; fr; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051025 Thunderbird/1.5 Mnenhy/0.6.0.104
Auto-completion of the address sometimes is strangely linked to the addressbook.
As an example for some addresses, typing the initials of a contact (supposedly linking to the surname) gives addresses of the like: FirstName <"First.Last"@domain, last@domain>, this is related to reformated alternative addresses, put first in the selection.
It would otherwise be nice to have in the addressbook a search filed mimicking the autocompletion and giving access to the selected contact.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a contact for First Last <First.Last@domain.org> with alternative addresses First.Last@alt.domain.org, last@alt.domain.org and surname FL
2. In a new mail window type FL as address
Actual Results:
The auto-completion will propose, in that order
- First Last <"First.Last"@alt.domain.org, last@alt.domain.org>
- First Last <First.Last@mydomain.org>
Expected Results:
Auto-completion in the order:
- First Last <First.Last@mydomain.org>
- First Last <First.Last@alt.domain.org>
- First Last <last@alt.mydomain.org>
- search for surname in the addressbook would help too.

Are you really using Thunderbird 1.5? If so, then sorry but we no longer support Thunderbird 1.5, please upgrade to Thunderbird 2 or Thunderbird 3.
If that's not the case, have you tried ensuring there are no trailing spaces in the email address fields in the contact?

No I am using TB 3.0.3.
I had an old pref remaining in my prefs.js
It should be
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; fr-FR; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100227 Lightning/1.0b1 Thunderbird/3.0.3
I have tried removing any blanks in the address fields, and it hasn't changed anything.

How do you have 3 mail addresses for a contact? Thunderbird address books only support two addresses.

Until now (TB2), I had no trouble giving as alternate address a list of addresses separated by commas.
Maybe this is not correct but then it would be a feature to be added.

I just tried on an old TB2 install (2.0.0.23) and it does the same thing in both, except that the alternate "addresses" appear first in TB3. But that's bug 543088.

>Maybe this is not correct
indeed, the field name is "Additional email", not "Additional emails"
I see what jim sees, so I don't see how this could have "worked" in v2. What you in effect want is >2 email addresses, which is Bug 118665 - Allow multiple email addresses / phone & fax numbers / URLs per card
