A new Firefox profile includes a link to the "Getting started" page on the Bookmarks toolbar. The objective of this page is to provide the users with a few task-based starting points. They could use them to enjoy the web and discover sites that will help them get the most out of Firefox, and the Internet in general. This page will be aimed towards beginning and intermediate Web users. We want to promote community/user oriented collaborative sites with good user experience in your region and language, and good standards support.
The current en-US defaults for this page are:
The 'Work' category: Google Docs, Remember the Milk, LinkedIn, Clipmarks Add-on
The 'Learn' category: Wikipedia, Topix, HowStuffWorks.com, Answers Add-on
The 'Play' category: YouTube, Hype Machine, Miro, PicLens Add-on
The 'Connect' category: Criagslist, Yelp, Facebook, Shareaholic Add-on
(See the en-US page at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/central/.)
We would like to provide a good set of links on this page for our Scottish Gaelic users.
First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for your language and come up with a good candidates. Michael, Kevin, we'll need your input on this, of course. The guidelines for making recommendations are on <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Firefox/Productization>.
Second, once we have a good list of candidates, your localization team will localize the 'Getting Started' index.html file which can be found here: http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozilla.com/trunk/en-US/firefox/central/index.html?content-type=text%2Fplain&view=co changing the en-US default as agreed in the first step.
The logos should be named sites-<sitename>.png and should be 110px wide and 65px high on white or transparent background. Stas can help on getting the logos from the website owners.
The localized index.html and the logos should be then attached in a ZIP archive to this bug, and a review should be requested from Stas (stas@mozilla.com) and Pascal (pascalc@gmail.com). Once the review have been granted, Pascal will take over to push the localized page on the server.
Thank you.

For this page, there might be a great potential to customize this to Scottish Gaelic users. For instance, take a look at the Irish page here:
http://ga-ie.www.mozilla.com/ga-IE/firefox/central/
If there is a Scottish Gaelic Open Office page, we can link to it here.

There is:
http://gd.openoffice.org/
I'll do my best to translate the page to Gaelic, I don't think I have the technical skills to do anything beyond that. Will ask for help from some cumputer savy people but not holding out much hope.

OK, so there are four sections, each can be customized.
'Work' category: Open Office, Google Docs (?), ? , ?
'Learn' category: ?
'Play' category: ?
'Connect' category: ?
Do you want to do anything here specifically for Scottish Gaelic? Feel free to get creative and suggest some things that "get people started" with the web when they start using the gd version of Firefox.

I think that there's a couple of great suggestions in bug 560524 comment 5 (the search engine set-up bug). While not all websites mentioned there might end up being chosen for the search engines, I think some could be featured in the "Getting Started" page.

Great idea, Staś. Michael, can you take some of those suggestions and start to fill out the pieces of where those pages might fit into the Getting Started page?

I'm currently up to my eyeballs with non-Fx stuff but I'll steal some time towards the end of the week!

Sounds good. Let's just keep chiseling away at the work load. Ping us in this bug when you have had a chance to think about the options and respond.

Ok, stealing time ... plus I seem to have confused the bug with the Fx Help Pages. Nm.
I've looked at what Irish and English have, there seems to be quite a bit of leeway in terms of what is offered, so I take it there is a certain amount of freedom in choosing whatever 4 categories are most relevant.
1) I like the Irish Software category (though it seems to overlap a bit with the Irish category), that makes a lot of sense since many people don't know about available tools. Likely candidates to my mind are:
Gaelic Wikipedia http://gd.wikipedia.org
Gaelic OpenOffice http://gd.wikipedia.org
The third is a bit tricky. I'd really like a link to Gaelic spellcheckers. They're all free but spread all over the place. Plus, the Dearbhair, probably the most widely used one, is forever being moved around the LTS site. We can either link there or link to the Gaelic Technology Forum (associated with the Faclair Beag) which keeps its links to such resources up to date (http://www.faclair.com/forum/index.php) The only other viable link would be to the top of the Gaelic section at LTS (http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/gaidhlig/index.asp), hoping that people would find it.
2) Something along the lines of News/Community seems appropriate. Again some overlap with the other bug:
BBC Alba (it's the only news resource, we have no papers, not even monthly ones...) http://www.bbc.co.uk/alba/
The Gaelic Forum http://www.foramnagaidhlig.net
Bloglines (Gaelic) http://www.bloglines.com/public/Liosta/
And possibly Facebook, which has a fairly sizable Gaelic community even if not a Gaelic interface
Alternatively a link to the Irish Channel TG4 would also work (instead of Facebook) as there is still some intelligibilty between the two languages (http://www.tg4.ie/)
3) Education
I guess with 60,000 speakers it's fairly relevant
Gaelic College http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/index_gd.html
Gaelic Learners' Association http://www.cli.org.uk/
Stow College http://www.stow.ac.uk/
National Parent's Org for Gaelic Medium Education http://www.parant.org.uk/
4) Terminology
Gaelic web users are eternally searching for a word...
Am Faclair Beag http://www.faclair.com
An Stòr-dàta
Briathrachais http://www2.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/faclair/sbg/lorg.php
Faclair na Pàrlamaid (a dictionary of official terminology, hosted by the Scottish Parliament) http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/ArtsCultureSport/arts/gaelic/gaelic-english/Dictionary
I see that the Irish portal is translate several levels down - I don't think I can manage that much translation in a hurry but I'll certainly make time to make sure we get at least the main page done (if I get some pointers on where and how).
Somehow embarrassing that I seem to be repeating myself, but there's not that much to choose from. Look forward to you feedback!

Just realised the OpenOffice link is wrong - should be http://gd.openoffice.org/
Are we ready to move on this one?

Michael, I put a copy of the en-GB file for you on SVN:
http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozilla.com/trunk/gd/firefox/central/index.html?revision=71737&content-type=text%2Fplain&view=co
This is the file to adapt with the suggestions you have discussed with Stas and Seth above. Feel free to attach your version of the file to this bug and I will commit it to SVN for you.

Ok, I have no illusions about getting it right first time round but here goes ;)
Some points:
* Permissions granted for use of logos for: Am Faclair Beag, Akerbeltz, Fòram na Gàidhlig, Stow College
* BBC logo is from Wikipedia where the copyright note says "This image only consists of simple geometric shapes and/or text. It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BBC.svg), so I'm assuming that's ok
* Preliminary permission from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and CLI though the people in question said they'd "double check"
* Apart from the above, I have also added Akerbeltz, not simply because of it being a major resource site for learners but also because I aim to use it to publicize Gaelic software develepments - I hope that's ok but if you're dubious about it, let me know.
Hope I didn't mess up any of the code, I stayed clear of Frontpage and used KompoZer, hope that's kosher enough!

Pascal: assuming you meant to link to http://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/gd/firefox/central/ :) I only see one nit:
Could you remove the LinkedIn logo from http://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/gd/firefox/central/#feature-work and change the title of the link from "LinkedIn" to "An Dearbhair"?
Otherwise, the page looks great. I'm impressed by the selection of links, fantastic suggestions, Michael!

Ok, now we've been stable for a while and I've gotten a better handle on what is useful to users, I'd like to make a few changes, especially to the addon suggestions on the Getting Started page.
1) Clipmarks > Quick Locale Switcher
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quick-locale-switcher/
This is good for people who have to share their systems with non-speakers
2) Shareaholic > An Dearbhair Beag (Gaelic spellchecker)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/scottish-gaelic-spell-checker/
We hadn't done the spellchecker back then, would like to list it now.
3) LTS Spellchecker > OO Spellchecker
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/faclair-afb
Change the increasingly outdated LTS spellchecker for the newer one
4) Change wording as the Gaelic Wikipedia has agreed a new localised name (Uicipeid)
5) Fix the TogBlog logo
(see also Bug 608970)

Additonal logos for the Dearbhair Beag and TogBlog

The logo for the Quick Locale Switcher is still outstanding, I've just emailed the developer to ask permission.

Ok, Martijn Kooij is happy for us to use his logo, he even supplied the new one he says he's going to use from the next release onwards. I think that's all the boxes ticked but let me know if there's anything else!

Ok, I can see the changes on the site now which is nice - but now there are 4 logos missing - QLS, An Dearbhair Beag (2x) and TogBlog. I've supplied all the images - did I forget something somewhere?

As per IRC, I don't have commit access to img/ on mozilla.com SVN repo. Instead, I'll create a patch and Pascal will commit it for me.
Michael, would you please attach archive with all the images that should be added?

Again? ;) Ok here you are, the Quick Locale Switcher Logo, the TogBlog logo and the Dearbhair Beag logo (appears twice). Thanks!
