[A note about terminology: I use the word "vendor" even though I mean vendor/creator/maintainer of product, which may be free or commercial.] A whole lot of web pages out there are created with some kinds of HTML editors or other tools that produce HTML (for example from databases). Many of those applications produce plain wrong HTML. Because of these there will continue to be the need to evangelize. We could change this by going to the tool vendors directly. I understand that changing some of these tools is an enourmous job, but there are at least some things that would be quite easy to do. For example it should be easy to change the products to produce the correct HTML DOCTYPE definition in the beginning of the generated HTML files. I propose that we should collect all such tools that we know of in this bug (or alternatively use this bug as a meta bug and make this depend on each tool bug). We should describe to the tool vendors what is wrong with their product, what kind of problems does it cause, and how they could fix the problems (if not all problems then at least how to minimize the harm).
And when the generated HTML is bogus, it is better to use no doctype at all. See also my comment from 2000-10-19 12:06 in bug 36045.
