The summary basically says it all. Sorry, if I absolutely missing the point and this is done intentionally. This is the case for both mail and news. You can view threads in the thread pane only if View/Messages/All is chosen. If you choose View/Messages/Unread the View/Messages/Threaded item is disabled. So looks like somewhere in the logic threaded view and unread-only view are mutualy exclusive.
