Did vista pdates occur that day? Windows UPdate|View update history Do you also get this error if you drag and drop a file into compose? Does it occur with thunderbird started in safe mode? https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

Do you ever attach from a network drive that might be down currently? You might try using the config editor (tools menu, options, advanced, general tab, config editor button, and type mail.compose.attach.dir, and reset that pref if it's pointing at a directory that might not be accessible.
Same error on XP, all updates applied, etc. Can work around by typing "attached" in the body of the email, then clicking the "Add Attachment" button at the bottom works.
I think this has been reported before, but I am having the same problem on both xp and win7 32 bit machines. One machine has alot of addons, so I figured there may be a conflict. However, the win7 machine only has lightning,.vcs loaded at the moment.
