Details
At last week's ECMA meeting, a delegate who loves Netscape asked me to file a
bug that blocks him using NS6. He cannot open .qif files from his bank, nor
from amex. If this isn't sufficient data, I can contact him for the a specific
test case. Windows platform, I don't know which OS.

Perhaps he just needs to associate a helper application, for the .qif mime type,
in the preferences?? Is this supposed to happen automatically if Windows knows
how to open a .qif file? Is that the bug? Thanks.

Target Milestone: --- → Future
I can provide more information on this bug (though I'm not the one who reported
it originally). In the helper applications, I've set up mime type
"application/vnd.intu.qfx" to execute "C:\Program Files\Intuit\Quicken\Qw.exe -X"
In Communicator, this works perfectly fine. When one selects to download
transactions from the Bank or credit cards, Quicken is started and it imports
the data. If Quicken is already open, a "Downloading..." screen comes up and it
imports the data.
In Mozilla and Netscape 6 nothing happens. Quicken doesn't appear to be started
at all, but no errors are reported. If Quicken is already started, it doesn't
switch to the Downloading... screen. According to Intuit tech support, the
program would start, regardless of the validity of the data supplied -- then
complain if it didn't like the input. So it appears that the program is never
being executed.
If it wasn't for this bug, I would have removed Communicator from my system
months ago. At this time, I only have Communicator so that I can do my banking ;-(
I've added myself to the CC list. I'd be happy to do any tests you would like to
get this resolved.

This was reported recently re. Mozilla 1.0:
i just downloaded the current version of mozilla. i was using the
www.firstusa.com website to download my credit card transactions. i downloaded
the qif file to my desktop but it was not accessible to quicken. when i tried to
import it to quicken it would not appear to be on the desktop even though it
was. i then downloaded with microsoft explorer and had no problem.
so far i have had good luck with the previous version of mozilla. it doesn't
crash all the time like explorer.
thanks

My reply:
I just used OFX [using Gecko/20020607 on Win2k] and also imported .QIF files
from 3 different online services I use, and had no problem with the files being
saved to my desktop and importing to Quicken.
I have been importing .qif files to Quicken with 0.9.4-1.0 builds with no
problems. I never set a preference and do not have to append .qif to the file
name when saving them.
The person who reported the issue hasn't replied to me but I will check again to
see if it's replicable.

Summary: Quicken file won't open → Downloaded .qif file won't import to Quicken
This bug got fixed sometime around .96? In my case it wasn't an association
problem -- the helper would start, but wouldn't get the data appropriately until
that beta. It's been working fine ever since.
If the user can't load a .QIF from his desktop then it has nothing to do with
Mozilla -- that's a Windows association problem. But he might want to make sure
that Mozilla has the right association for the mime type. I think I checked the
Windows associations and built a Mozilla association by hand ;-)
