"[Program Files]\Mozilla.org\Mozilla\" or "[Program Files]\Mozilla.org Mozilla\" is where Mozilla Communicator will install on Win32 by default. - Product name "Mozilla" is overused and has no meaning. (Is it Communicator? All mozilla.org source? mozilla.org? mozilla.org source contributors?) "Communicator" is the name of the appsuite (see xpfe/communicator/). "SeaMonkey" is the project name and often used instead of "Communicator" to differentiate from Netscape, but I think, the plan is to change the project name when Mozilla 1.0 is done. The product name should be stable, thus I vote for "Communicator". Mitchell, what do you think? - Company name Strictly, the 'company name' is "mozilla.org" (note: lower-case!). However, in this case, I'd vote for "Mozilla". "Mozilla Communicator" makes sense to me.
are not communicator and SeaMonkey at least in some way netscape copyrights? communicator probably not really though...
no.
Well, "Communicator" is "in some way" a Netscape trademark: in combination with "Netscape". But that's irrelevant.
<annoyed> I've posted this issue sometime ago and got no reposonse (it's rather annoying), thus I decided on [Program files]\Mozilla.org\Mozilla as the default path (yes Mozilla.org is capilcalized on purpose!). This is only for the Windows platform. FYI: The Windows platform does have a standard format for directory structure, (might not be as widely used or accepted, but still) just like the Mac and Unix systems do. This will not be changed until I hear from an official spokesperson at mozilla.org, unless you prefer Seamonkey back. </annoyed>

It seems that Netscape is overruling Mozilla.org
I think these are perfect names, ben. When one says "mozilla" with respect to some software, one generally thinks of what netscape product marketing once named "communicator" that is, a suite of software for using the network in an interesting way, allowing access to a multitude of protocols behind a unified interface. "mozilla" is never confused for it's individual components (xpcom, nspr, psm, etc.) *or* other projects which happen to live under the mozilla/ source directory (grendel, tinderbox, bonsai). As to the case, yeah, sure, mozilla.org is technically correct, but Mozilla.org follows windows convention better. You are, of course, free to use whatever names you'd like in Beonex's installer.
> I've posted this issue sometime ago and got no reposonse I'm sorry, but I didn't know. I can hardly read all groups. (I do read xpinstall occasionally.) > It seems that Netscape is overruling Mozilla.org Because ssu works for Netscape? I don't think, this is an issue here. If people think the mozilla.org/Mozilla is better choice, then OK. Nevertheless, "Mozilla.org" capitalized just hurts in my eyes and and supports a wrong spelling for newbies and reporters. I'd argue that the right spelling of a "company" name is more important than Windows Guidelines. English rules say that the first word in a sentence is always capitalized, nevertheless, mozilla.org isn't, even at the beginning of a sentence. > You are, of course, free to use whatever names you'd like in Beonex's > installer. I know and I do. Reassigning to nobody makes no sense here, so taking it. If you think that this bug should not be fixed, mark WONTFIX.

Narrowing SUMMARY to the capitalization of mozilla.org.
Summary: Bad choice of product and company name → Default path has "Mozilla.org", not "mozilla.org"
the directory should be called "\Mozilla" I don't have a single program directory on my overloaded PC that has a ".xxx" extension. Other companies don't call their directories by their full and correct company name either (ever seen the directory: "\Corel Corporation Business Applications" ?)
I dont really get it. We (the win installer) provide a default path, which in my opinion is good. If the user wants to install into "\Mozilla Powerbrowser" then he/she can change it. I often change installation path. "Mozilla.org" is a cool company/organization name and works in 8.3 OS'es.
mozilla.org staff won't object if the "m" in mozilla.org is capitalized at the beginning of a sentence. It hurts the eyes of some. But having a sentence begin with a lower case letter hurts the eyes of others. We try to avoid this be rewriting sentences to avoid the issue (ugh). But we don't object if others use a capital letter to begin a sentence. I am blissfully ignorant of Windows conventions, so I defer to leaf as to how to balance correct capitalization vs. Windows conventions. Finally, I don't get any sense of netscape trying to overrule mozilla.org on this. mitchell
leaf, feel free to mark WONTFIX, if you think that's the right decision.
i think endico submitted a patch to ssu to change the case, so this is probably fixed, not wontfix ;)
i'll be bold and mark this wontfix. I didn't submit a patch to ssu, i just told him that mozilla.org should normally be lower case and asked him what the technical reason for it being upper case was. I think the answer to that is because Windows is lame and forces the first letter of all file and directory names to be upper case. Its not worth fighting.
The name "latest" implies that this would be the right thing to download, if you want to have the LATEST build. But that far from being true. Mitchell, please read the comment. "I've posted this issue sometime ago and got no reposonse (it's rather annoying), thus I decided on .." And then forget it, it was just a joke :-) But this isn't! We now have our selfs a real bloated path for Windows. "Mozilla is a bloated browser, mainly used by Linux users" That's the word out on the street! So go ahead, and confirm that by overusing the name 'mozilla' in the path, it's fine by me. Now they can add: "isn't one 'mozilla' enough?". Why do something in the installer, what windows seems to do already. What btw, isn't that true because my Windows NT box doesn't do that 'trick'.
> Windows [...] forces the first letter of > all file and directory names to be upper case. I don't think so. I think, the filesystem keeps the case. But I'm not sure. > Windows. "Mozilla is a bloated browser, mainly used by Linux users" Linux users call it a Windows monster, ignoring Unix conventions. > Its not worth fighting. Agreed. > i'll [...] mark this wontfix. You didn't. Doing that on your behalf.
