simon fraser posted this to n.p.m.mail-news: "we should really be putting out a User-Agent header in mail and news messages. X-Mailer and X-Newsreader are deprecated (I'm looking at draft-ietf-usefor-article-02)."

This is pretty easy to fix and we should do this per the spec: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-usefor-article-02.txt I will check this change in with my landing of quoting code. - rhp

All fixed...we will not emit User-Agent in mail and news messages. - rhp
You will *not* emit one? Why not?
Uhg...I need sleep: not = NOW We will now emit one for mail and news messages. Goodnight :-) - rhp
Was this fix delayed with the whole new-quoting thing? Should we expect it in the first good M8 builds, then? I don't see the header in the 6_21 Linux seamonkey build, anyway....
It should be there and it's not tied to the quoting. I see it being generated when I test message send operations. - rhp
OK, then, since there's no test case, can we start with these basic questions? 1. Should it show up in the displayed header field for either mail or news at the current stage of development? 2. Should it show up in the (Win/Linux) console window at message send time? 3. Is it only visible through a test tool such as nntptest?
It is a header that is currently called "X-Mailer" and you have to look at the source of the message to see it...that is the only place I know where it shows up. Or set the pref to display all headers...its the same as the 4.x pref. - rhp

Great; thanks! I had no idea we had that pref in 5.0. Verified on 6_21m7 Win and Linux; 6_16 Mac. The UserAgent string shows up in the header pane when all prefs are viewed. It's doesn't appear labelled as such, like, for example, the Subject actually says "Subject:", but it has the traditional UserAgent stuff in it.
