The current chrome is all in GIF format. It should be changed to PNG to allow for 24-bit graphics, transparency etc. in the UI. It also brings Mozilla into line with other open source projects such as Gnome which have eschewed the proprietary GIF in favour of PNG.

German, can you please double check whether .gif is still the right format to use?
I have no probs with PNG per se and love it's capabilities (not all of which will be supported in Mozilla as far as I know), but I am scared of the lack of tools for creating content. In addition PNG is not an animation format which may limit its use later on. I do not think this should be a bug, as anybody in mozilla is free to create stylesheets with resources containing PNGs instead of GIFs for the mozilla browser and it should work properly. The chrome is content. Thoughts?

Moving all UE/UI bugs to new component: User Interface: Design Feedback UE/UI component will be deleted.

Using GIFs instead of PNGs isn't really a bug, but the bugzilla system is also used for RFEs. This is certainly an enhancement I would like. Also see bug 8415 and bug 38638 (LATER).
Chaning the qa contact on these bugs to me. MPT will be moving to the owner of this component shortly. I would like to thank him for all his hard work as he moves roles in mozilla.org...Yada, Yada, Yada...
