Would like to have the ability to reset "Save a copy of the sent messages to
Send Folder" in the compose window on the fly. In other words, if I don't want
to save a copy of the message I'm about to send (because it's a test message for
example) I can just turn the option off right in the compose window (assuming it
is turned ON in the prefs). Likewise, if the option is turned off in the prefs
by default you can turn it on in the compose window for the messages you do want
to save a copy of.

Currently, you can set per message a second fcc but you cannot overwrite the
global fcc setting.

yeah.. why not have a "Dont File Sent Message" menuitem under "Options" ->
"File Sent Message" to turn off the saving of the sent message.

No, makes more sense to have it as a checkbox in the compose window. Then in
the preferences you sent the default as to save or not to save sent messages by
default.
Because say you save all your msgs, but this particular one you don't want
saved for some reason. So while in the compose window you go under a menu and
turn it off and hit save. Now in order to turn it back on so that your msgs
continue to save next time, you have to remember that you turned it off and wait
until the next time you compose a msg to turn it on. ergh...doesn't make sense
and will mess users up. Now if you have to put it under the menu...the option
should be, don't save msg this time, but that would just look wierd in a menu imho.

I don't aggree shwag. As I mentioned in the duplicate of this bug
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249992 this feature exsists in
Lotus Notes 5.0.?
I would suggest the following settings scheme:
- always save in Sent (default)
- prompt me
- never save in Sent
If the user never changes this settings it will remain as it is today - the
e-mail message allways gets copied to Sent. You cannot take responsibility
about users messing up the settings. If they change it they should live with
it, as it is with all other cases of changing the settings.

I strongly disagree with the "prompt always" preferences option. Like the other commenter I occassionally have large file attachements to send that I do not want sucking up the limited storage space I have in my email account. 95 times out of 100 though, I'm just sending plain text and do want the sent message saved. In these circumstances having to actively choose whether or not to save each and every message is a hassle. I should be able to specify a default behavior in the preferences (as I can currently) which is easily overideable on a per-message basis without having to slog through an additional dialog box. To support this minimally, the implementation depicted in the attached Horde webmail screenshot is ideal. Adding an Fcc: field (with appropriate defaulting based on preferences settings) would be an equally efficient and more flexible option though is more powerful a solution than I need at the moment.

I would assume everyone is familiar with https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=thunderbird&id=762 ?
It does what's requested in this bug, and much more. I sure wish its full functionality found its way into mainline Mozilla and TB. I use it all the time, and its priceless.

With Gmail labels and Gmail popularity, one might want to send an incoming mail to multiple relevant folders. This can be done with filters currently. Similarly when replying, one may want to copy to multiple folders.
How about implementing the following:
Remove "Send Copy to" menu item from options.
Add "Copy to Folder:" header to compose fields labels list. When user opens a compose dialog, the default FCC for that Account/Identity is added into the compose fields like the To, CC and newsgroup fields. The user can then choose to add more FCCs (more than one) or remove the existing one. As an additional advantage the user will know exactly where the copy of the mail is being sent to (which is not very obvious because it depends on which account you have clicked compose button, account settings, identity settings)
One problem is that a bit of simplicity is lost. For a first time user, the compose fields will look more threatening. May be then showing then the ability to edit FCC should be an option - off by default (which experienced users will enable).

I don't agree with this feature because I want to have full traceability of my work: if there were an option like that could, for example, send an important email without saving it. :-(
However, I read different opinions here which think that this option would be useful: is a matter of preference and therefore not argue.
However in the case of comment #15 when I send mail with attachments that I don't need to keep, usually I delete attachments in the mail stored in sentbox, so I can still keep track of the fact that I sent the email etc etc ...

Just don't use the feature, then!
(There could even be a (hidden) pref to disable it, if need be.)

This is a feature that should be easy to do as an add-on first.
