We have an http authentication here at work that requires you to login to use
the internet. It expires every 30 minutes, and the browser pops up the http
authentication window. Mozilla, for as long as I can remember, has had trouble
with this. It either sometimes shows an authentication failure message as text
within the browser window instead of poping up the authentication popup, or it
pops it up ok, but shows the failure as text in the browser if you then login
incorrectly. If the auth pops-up ok and you login correctly; then there are no
problems. This seems to be cache related somehow also because once the auth
failure incorrectly appears as text in the browser; if you hit the shift-reload
button repeadidly very quickly, after about 5-10 trys; the auth popup will
suddenly popup, you can then login, and all is once again corrected. I am not
sure how this authentication is setup here, but I believe it has something to do
with dns lookup because when I use hard-coded urls; the authentication never
pops up and I can always access the internet.
when, for example, accessing www.theonion.com; the message that incorrectly
appears in the browser is:
HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized
WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm=""XXX Internet. All use is monitored." (ID9144)"
Connection: close
Netscape properly pops up the authentication popup asking for the user name and
password. The text that netscape displays on the popup is "Enter username for
"XXX Internet. All use is monitored. at www.onion.com:
I have never seen Netscape show a message like the one mozilla shows, not even
if I attempt to login incorrectly, it shows- Authorization failed, retry?.
Never seen the ID9144 or the connection: close in Netscape.
In the above examples, I have replaced the company name here with XXX.

Reporter what build id are you using? Have you tried the latest nightlies and
created a new profile? I believe this was fixed a while back but it may have
regressed. Thanks in advance.

see screenprint attachment 31300 [details] above. This was taken on winnt build id
2001041704. I typed in google.com and got the html that is shown in the browser
instead of the authentication popup (pretent that the authentication popup shown
in the image isnt there yet- it did not appear until AFTER I cleared the cache).
I then cleared the memory and disk cache and hit enter again. The
authentication popup that is shown in the image now appears- this is when i took
the screenprint. I login and all is ok until the next 30 minutes are up and the
same thing happens again. I also tested on linux build id 2001041721 and the
problem never happens- all is ok with linux.

Can you (or anyone) provide a testcase of some sort for this?
This is impossible to reproduce without one.

Somewhere along the way, this seems to have gotten fixed. I can no longer
reproduce the problem. I have tested it on linux 0.9.1 and on windows build id
2001062504. If you want me to re-test on windows 0.9.1; add a comment and I
will reload it and test.

reporter:
This bug is a "futured" or "untargeted" bug which has been "resolved/works for
me". Most bugs meeting this criteria are usually somewhat out of date or working
in the current builds.
If this bug is not happening for you in a recent build (such as the Mozilla
daily build, Mozilla 0.9.3, or Netscape 6.1), please use the friendly "Mark bugs
as VERIFIED" radio button to set this bug to "VERIFIED/WORKS FOR ME"
If you reported the bug on a platform (e.g. Linux) and other contributors
reported on another platform (e.g. Mac OS), please comment that it works for you
but do not verify it yet.
For these multi-platform bug reports, we need to verify all reported platforms
-OR- create new "still broken on platform X" bugs when you verify.
