When opening a link in an email message via right click -> Open in New Window, if no Browser windows are open, Mozilla will open a Browser window and load the user's home page. If at least one Browser window is open, it correctly loads the linked page. I am unsure when this behavior started, but it is present in 0.8.1, 2001040904 and the builds.

WORKSFORME Platform: PC OS: Windows 98 Mozilla Build: 2001041704 Reporter try downloading the latest nightlies and creating a new profile. See if that fixes the problem. Report back either way. Thanks in advance.
It still happens on 2001041704 with a new profile on a different machine. I did notice that rather than no other browser windows being open, it's that no other browser windows *have been* or are open during that mozilla session. (I start the mozilla mail program using a shortcut to "...\bin\mozilla.exe -mail") If I start the browser, open the mail program, and close the browser, it will open the link correctly. It seems that it loads the homepage if the homepage has not loaded since mozilla was started.
I can confirm this. When starting with "mozilla -mail" then trying to open a link with "Open Link in New Window". The first attempt will just open the home page, subsequent attempts work as expected. Might be related to bug 59078. user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.8.1+) Gecko/20010416 build id: 2001041604

Possibly related to 59078, but not the same issue; that one works for me in recent builds, while this doesn't. I can associate with .gif or .jpg files now and it opens only one window that is the desired file, not the homepage, etc. I still have the issue of the home page opening from a link in Mail messages if the Browser has not yet loaded the home page.
Still an issue in 2001042304 on Win2k.

As could be expected (just hadn't tested before), this also happens when starting Mozilla with Composer, etc - anything but browser. Right-click -> Edit on an HTML file will cause the same behavior. (Still present in 2001050515 / 0.9)
It happens also in: Mozilla 0.9 2001050515 Win2k Configure Mozilla to start only Mail&News in startup. Go to a IMAP email message that has an http address. Right click and select, open in new windows. The first mozilla windows appears and does not show the link you wanted to open. Try again and it works. Oliver
Yeah - basically what's happening is if the browser hasn't been opened since the program was started, the first browser window to open is the home page. The only instance I can find of opening Mozilla and having a browser open to anything other than the homepage is opening an associated local file - in that case, the browser opens the correct file. In any case where Mail, Composer, etc. was started before the browser, the first browser window to open will be the home page. I first noticed it by using a shortcut to mozilla.exe -mail and trying to open links from mail messages (as I reported).
Note this happens on all systems, launching -mail then trying to view the source of a message the first time. After closing browser window and viewing again the source displays. Changing platform to all.

Updated Summary to better reflect the bug (no other Browser window open -> home page has not yet been loaded)
Summary: Mozilla loads home page when opening link in new window from mail if no other Browser window is open → Mozilla loads home page when opening link from mail if home page has not yet been loaded
It also happend when you star mail&news and then select "view source" in an email. If you try again, the second window show the source.

CTRL-U is completely broken now. It always loads the home page. Never loads the message source. Is this related to this bug or should this be a separate bug?
i suspect that's bug 89345.
this is a dup of a bug that was fixed on the branch and the trunk at the end of last week. I'd suggest re-trying this on a current build. It should work.
this is working now.

bug 73141 specifically for first time use of browser to view a link or source of a mail message brought up a blank page (view source) or the Netscape Home Page (click on link). The criteria for this was to launch using -mail so the Browser page has not been used yet. That specific case is fixed and verified. However, there are several other open bugs regarding random blank browser windows when clicking on links. All of the scenarios I see in this bug mention the specific criteria so I will verify this as fixed per the duplicate bug 73141 being verified.
