There are more items such as Cookies, Password, Forms, and Security under
Advanced that are not listed.
Since you can not modify Autofill, this is a smoketest blocker.
Severity: major → blocker
Keywords: regression,
smoketest
Summary: Mail/News, Composer not listed as startup items in Preferences. → Mail/News, Composer, Cookies, Security, etc. not listed in Preferences.

I believe this is related to this bug...
seen on linux commercial build 2001-05-03-05-trunk (note: doubled checked this
agaist mozilla build 2001-05-03-05-trunk...it is present there too)
- go to Tasks
Mail and IM aren't listed
the icons for these apps are also missing from bottom left of the browser
Able to test IM from the sidebar.
- go to Tasks | Privacy and Security
Personal Security Manager is the only selection there( and doesn't exist)
there should also be Form manager, cookie manager and password manager

seems like dynamic overlays must have broke somehow... I think this is causing
the other smoketest blocker as well
Comment 6•24 years ago

nope, it's a packaging issue - my build is just fine.

Why, then is prefs.js modified so that the old mail/news account info is not
used any more? I could not restore the info by copying and pasting from old
prefs.js into the new one. I had to replace entire prefs.js with the old one.
Comment 8•24 years ago
|

even if it's a packaging issue, someone has to fix it and I'm feeling nasty
today so the tree stays closed til it is, and we respin.
Comment 9•24 years ago
|
||
ok, no matter what the status is, not having mailnews installed will not
eliminate the mail prefs from your prefs.js - something else must have gone
wrong.
Comment 10•24 years ago

there were some packaging related checkins yesterday, but nothing that would
cause this problem, as best I can tell. Does this only happen on installed
builds, or does it happen on .tar.gz's too?

If you see Mail/News appearing OK, try launching again. The second or third
launch would show this bug.
Comment 12•24 years ago

Someone else reported this to me on my rpm builds which means it's probably a
packaging problem of some kind.
Comment 13•24 years ago

I believe switching themes is causing this. I reloaded the build on all three
platforms and the menus and icons are present. Reducing severity.

I'mm seeing this bug on Windows 98 using build ID 2001050304 (the latest zipped
version). The first time I ran this new build I had mail. The second time I ran
it mail was gone. My task menu now only list Navigator, Composer and Address
Book. The Preferences panel is also similarly slim.

on the mac, if you do a fresh install, everything's there. If you switch themes
and restart the browser, they're missing.
the question is, is this caused by switching themes, or by restarting the
browser. If it's switching themes we can tell people not to do that. If it's
just restarting the browser that causes this, this is still a blocker.

I can assure you that this has nothing to do with theme switching.
Comment 17•24 years ago

i didn't switch themes, and i see this with subsequent startups of the browser.
upping to blocker.

One windows I switch themes then nothing happens. All windows are still modern.
I close the pref window and reopen it it now has the classic theme
Then I restart the browser and browser window finally shows the classic theme.
In my tasks menu i have a (2) right above privacy and security.
Severity: blocker → critical
Comment 19•24 years ago
|
||
Could it be the theme itself? I have, so far, failed to reproduce this on the
Mac using the classic theme. Let me switch over to the modern theme and see what
happens.
Comment 20•24 years ago
|
||
Ok, I take that back. I just lost security while still under classic.
Comment 21•24 years ago
|
||
i don't understand why this isn't a blocker --i didn't switch themes, but i see
this when i restart the browser. or, could it be dependent on what the theme was
on startup [ie, not theme switching per se]? thx!

hokay, spoke with akkana-sheriff-in-residence who sez this might be a packaging
issue and that matt and chris are working on it. however, the tree is now open,
and i don't know if there are gonna be respins for this. go ahead and bump this
down to critical...but it'd be nice to get further info. thanks in advance!
Comment 23•24 years ago
|

Sorry, I'm seeing things... I can't reproduce with either skin Classic or Modern.
Comment 24•24 years ago
|

If possible, I'd like to get respins for this. Having certain components not
show up on subsequent launch of the product is not good. Also, the summary of
this bug talks about preferences, but from reading this bug, it appears to talk
about unable to access those componetns from the Task menu or the Taskbar.

sspitzer & I tried backing out waterson's xmlrdf change from yesterday,
and it seems to fix this problem. Over to waterson.

Something that may or may not be related is: on the Mac, if you click the Task
menu right after launch, as soon as the menubar appears and before the first
window is displayed, the menu is unusually long and the items are all messed up.
It appears as:
Task
------------------------
Navigator 1
Mail 2
Mail 2
Composer 4
Address Book 5
------------------------
IRC Chat 8
Privacy and Security >
IRC Chat 8
------------------------
Tools >
------------------------
Navigator 1
Composer 4
Address Book 5
------------------------
Privacy and Security >
------------------------
Tools >
------------------------
Interestingly enough, the bottom part of the menu corresponds to what people have
describes: no Mail, no IRC.
Then if you release the mouse button, wait until the first window shows up and
click the mnu again, it's back to normal.

I don't think the problem has anything to do with themes. I always "rm -f"
.mozilla and /usr/local/mozilla, then perform a typical install. The first time
I can see Mail listed in Tasks menu but if I close the browser and then
immediately launch it again, the Mail item from the Task menu is gone! I think
this is a blocker as this wasn't present at build 20010303*.
