This can be multiple times per paint which can delay tab switch substantially.

Does this reproduce in the current Firefox Nightly?

I think the problem is still there. Unfortunately I can't test the original website since it has been updated (the archive.org version does not seem to be complete). However, https://web.archive.org/web/20130321183936/http://www.apple.com/ipad/accessories/ works and the animations flicker a lot when you drag the cover on and off (until all frames are cached).

Could you please create a minimized testcase and attach it to this bug?

Nevermind, I can reproduce this now on both my Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 PCs. Unfortunately my efforts to make an offline testcase based on the link in comment 7 failed so we'll need to rely on the Web Archive for this.
