Using SMTP "SSL When Available" to a non-ssl server doesn't work

Details
* Activate "SSL When Available" in Outgoing SMTP
* Use a non-SSL SMTP server(in my case a Sun Solaris 7 Sendmail)
* Send a E-Mail
Mail never gets sent. It's just tries and tries and tries. It seems it never
times out either. To stop it you have to close the Compose window.
