I'm thinking this is related to Geoff's huge 27k contacts list. Geoff uses AVG. Summary of private conversation with Geoff: - windows 7, 4GB - thunderbird.exe using 370 MB. Firefox uses 216 MB - I'm scared to 'cull' theses as most are professional contacts (I'm a publicist) and it's hard to be sure which are current and which not... - you use AVG - Inbox ~2GB, Sent ~1GB - crash happens as I compose a new email. - long time for an address to be recognised in the 'to' address spot. - often get a message saying it's stopped something and asking whether to wait or try and continue - slowness of my PC right across the board… on all programs… - emptied trash… - removed a lot of old emails pretty regularly (and recently)… - lots of big emails with attachments constantly in my inbox and sent box… - I sort / filter many into other folders… but not as heavy as In and sent… - I do compact pretty often - get ‘message was sent but could not be saved in sent box’ or ‘sent folder is full’ etc) - I empty junk and trash pretty regularly - 29,000 contacts > please plug in the word "purge" and give me the values for > mail.prompt_purge_threshhold default boolean true > mail.purge.min_delay default integer 480 > mail.purge.timer_interval default integer 5 > mail.purge_threshhold_mb default integer 20 > mail.purge_threshold_migrated user set boolean true (in bold)

Geoff, does crashing stop in one of these scenarios: 1. Using version 23 or 24 beta from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ ? 2. temporarily MOVE your large address book files out of the profile directory?
