(Win 2000) Go to: Control Panel | Internet Options | Programs Tab (Internet Properties) The Mozilla is not included in the list of programs under the E-mail pick list. It isn't listed under Newsgroups either.
Does anyone know whether this is related to MAPI ? I know windows does alot of things involving default mail apps through MAPI. I don't remember how far support has come, but it would be good to be able to specify the default mail (and news) reader as mozilla.
On Win98 at least Moz should be adding itself to these 2 registry keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\News Should this be Mail Backend? Is this even a Mail issue?
setting to Mail backend Does bug 11057 cover this?

Investigation seems to be going on in bug 90502. This bug can't be duped to that one because that has turned into a hidden Netscape bug for some reason.

Bug 90502 is related but NOT a dup of bug 90071. Bug 90502 is about "Netscape 6 E-mail Client Doesn't Show Up On Windows XP Startup Menu" which is specific to the (XP-only) start menu entry for E-Mail. Bug 90071 was orginally about Mozilla email not appearing in the list of email applications under Control Panel|Internet Options|Programs Tab (Internet Properties) The XP start menu email is different from the default system email and the list of installed email applications. See BETA-HOWTO: Register an Internet Browser or E-mail Client With the Windows XP Start Menu (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q297/8/78.ASP): NOTES: Registration as the default Start menu e-mail application is different from registration as the system default e-mail client or the registered mailto handler. The system default e-mail client is started when the user clicks Read e-mail from the Internet Explorer Tools menu. The registered mailto handler is launched when the user clicks an URL of the form mailto:someone@microsoft.com. The Start menu e-mail application is used when the user clicks the E-mail icon on the Start menu. These bugs are related, in that if the XP start menu email registry is not set, then it will use default system email. From the same MS Howto: If there is no default Start menu e-mail application specified, then the E-mail icon on the Start menu will start the system default e-mail client.
moving to 0.9.4

reassigning to ssu and moving to 0.9.5. I think this will work on XP, but given that we don't support Simple MAPI yet, we didnt' want to do this on all platforms.

We need MAPI support before this can happen.

Will the vast majority of this not be fixed when Bug 91702 (Enable simple MAPI support in mail) is fixed? That bug is nsenterprise+, so will be fixed before 0.9.6 is out. If I understand correctly, once 91702 is fixed all this required is mozilla to add a registry entry or something.
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.7 → mozilla0.9.8

I talked to Srilatha. It looks like something happened when the MAPI code landed on the trunk. She agreed to look into this. Reassigning this bug to her.

Sean figured out that, the cause of the problem is that the mapi files are not added to the packages-win file. Reassigning to ssu

Attached patch patch v1.0 (deleted) — Splinter Review
This patch will deliver the missing mapi files and also update the windows registry to have mailnews appear in the list of available mail apps. This does not set mailnews as the default MAPI handler. That is done by mailnews via the preferences.

About Bug 120057 maked as duplicate : I now can select mozilla mail as an mail application just it does'nt work.
I wonder if it's because of the switching happening via the control panels (meaning outside of the mail code)? The mail code does some file manipulation depending on which OS you're running. valette@crf.canon.fr, which OS did you see this happen on?
I saw my problem and made the additional comments based on what I see on WINDOWS XP professional US version with all availiable windows update patches included.
To explain what I did : 1) I checked the box in the mail news peference menu to make mozilla mail the default mailer. The box is greyed. If I exit and restart, the chnage is lost the box remains unchecked. 2) I used the internet option menu from control panel and indeed was able to see mozilla mail and put it as the default mailer application. It did something as resatrting outlook, it proposed me to put outlook as the default mailer. If I answer yes the value is changed back to outlook. But using office XP, if I open an excell document and do "file"->"send to"-> "Mail to As attachement, I get an error: "Either there is no default mail or the current mail cleint cannot fullfill the messaging request..." NB : mozilla mail is properly configured as I use it to read and send mail from my windows box (when forced to use it due to nice microsoft proprietary format :-))
This sounds more like a new bug. I've filed bug http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120359 Please add any new comments to bug 120359.

verified on mozilla branch build 2002042506 that Mozila Mail is now an option found in Email app pick list, but Mozilla Mail is still not an option for Newsgroup apps to select. Since the comments in this bug focused on the Email App, this bug will be marked verified. Please file another bug regarding Mozilla Mail not a Newsgroup App option if it is determined that that should be the case.
