Right now there it is not possible to import filters from different versions of
Mozilla, although this could be very useful for people who use Mozilla on
different computers. I tried to do this by simply copying rules.dat into the
mail folder, but this didn't work. I also tried to copy the filters I wanted
from the old rules.dat into the new file by copy and paste, but this didn't work
either. A simple import function which allows to select the filters used in
another copy of Mozilla would be a simple but really useful thing.

I'm going to let someone else verify this one.. I'm not sure if this really is
a duplicate or not. Although very similar in the request for "email import
filters", this one deals with "Mozilla" filters, while the duplicated bug deals
with Outlook Express filters (and other programs).
I would consider these two bugs seperate requests..
I would agree that this is a duplicate if bug 77017 had a 'summary' change to
request email import filters in general (rather than just OE, as specified in
the current summary).
Any thoughts? (or am I looking into this too much?) If someone does think it's
a duplicate, you can verify it :)
I don't really care either way, I was going on the assumption that if we ever
get around to having an import tool for filters we'd probably build in a few
formats and so duped this. Naving can call the shot. I don't think we'll get
to either one anytime soon and by the time either is addressed, we'll probably
have more duplicates anyway.

Adding the ability to import Mozilla filters seems fairly simple to me and
should definitely be part of a 1.0 release. This can't be too difficult...
Famous last words. Anyway, I was referring to lists/schedules I've seen for
Netscape development and hadn't heard anything otherwise on mozilla end. I may
be off-base. I'll reopen to see if this indeed does catch anyone's attention.

Can we assume that the UI to import filters also means that we would have a UI
to export filters? Or should that be in the summary? Or should it be a
separate bug?

No, IMHO it should be the job of the *target application* to import Mozilla filters.

1) My question was about exporting, not importing.
2) The the target application that I was thinking about was Mozilla.
Scenario #1 :
A user wants to export the filters from Mozilla to a file so that they could
easily be transferred to another computer and imported into another instance of
Mozilla.
Scenario #2 :
Two or more users share a computer and they each have their own profiles. One
user creates sets up a bunch of filters and wants to export them to a file so
that the filters can be imported into the other Mozilla profiles on that same
computer.

I'm cleaning up the multiple almost-identical bugs we have on this topic, so
this is being marked as a dupe of bug 166842. I should have done it the other
way around, as this is the older bug, but I've already made 166842 the "master
bug" for a few other bugs. Doh. :-I If I've committed a heinous crime by
doing so please slap me around and un-dupe. Go vote for 166842 if you care
about this feature.
