build 2001091311
Steps:
1. Open browser window, begin a download
2. Once download dialog appears, close browser window, mail window, etc.
3. As the file is downloading, try to open a new browser or mail window
I was not able to do this either using keyboard shortcuts or the File Menu.
Confirmed using Mac/2001091311 (0.9.4).

Looks like hidden window is busted again. Actually, hidden window needs a bunch
of lovin' especially some controllers to disable menu items. Marking p2 and
mozilla0.9.7

-> All/All, based on dupe bug 106030.

Ok, I know what this bug is about. If you close all windows except for a
download progress window, there is no UI to get to other parts of the app. There
are workarounds. On windows, double-click on mozilla.exe before the download
window goes away. That should spawn a new browser window. On mac, the main menu
bar should still be there, so this isn't a problem. On linux, you're screwed. At
any rate, probably should do something about it one of these days, just won't
get to it anytime soon. Marking p3 and mozilla1.1
Priority: P2 → P3
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.7 → mozilla1.1

I disagree. I'm using 0.9.7 on the Mac and this bug applies to me as well. I
cannot open a new window using any of the commands if I close all my browsers
while a download is in progress, including New Navigator Window and any of my
bookmarks. Don't know why though. I think this should be fixed by 1.0.

Adding nsbeta1 nomination. This bug is super-annoying, especially on Mac. Get
into a state where you have just the download window open, and then your browser
is unusable until the download has finished. It might as well just lock up.

No. You're not screwed on linux.
You can use remote to open a new window.

This should definitely be fixed before 1.0 (which, it appears, is sneaking right
up on us).

Any word on a fix for this bug? It's been awhile since we've seen anything but
duplicates (which, to me at least, signify that a fair number of people think
this is important).

One workaround on OS X is to minimize the download dialog. This will bring back
the menus, including File -> New.
Comment 36•22 years ago

This bug is still around. In Jaguar, minimizing the download window allows new
ones to be opened, as above.

This might be related (not sure). With two download windows open (Download
manager window not open), one download window can be chosen from the Window menu
to be brought to the front (this is with two other browser windows open (with
various numbers of tabs)). When trying to bring the second download window to
the front (via Window->second download window), the second download window
doesn't come to the front and the Window menu remains highlighted. Other Windows
can be chosen however.

Still there in 1.6b on Mac OS X (10.3). Absolutely no way to get a new window
open until the download finishes. I guess there's a much more elegant way to get
it solved on a Mac GUI instead of using work-arounds like hidden windows (which
are annoying too when using Exposé, this window gets revealed in the overview).

Just came to bugzilla to report this and found it on search -- it's happening
for me in the 1.0 version of FireFox. The menus don't even appear for me. If the
download window's the only window left open you're screwed till the download
finishes. In this case, it took quite a while before I got my browser back :(
