Steps to reproduce: 1. Go to http://www.robrat.com/toons/008.jpg. (warning: porn) 2. Right-click the image and select "Save Image ...". 3. A save dialog will appear. Expected result: 008 is the default filename, letting me press end and then a letter to append to the filename. (Internet Explorer does this correctly.) Actual result: 008.jpg is the default filename, making it much more difficult to edit the filename. Why this is important: many porn sites use 1-, 2-, or 3-digit numbers for the names of their images, and you can't have two files with the same name.

Personally, I like the existing functionality, where you can change the extensions of files as you save them. I'll often save a .txt file as .tab from within the Save As ... dialog box, thereby saving me the extra step of doing it manually later. (I use .tab for guitar tablature) This is also helpful when downloading a file such as PrettyGirl.jpg.vbs ...

Mike: you could save the file with a different extension by changing the file type in the drop-down from "Text File (*.txt)" to "All files". That's how it works in most other applications. Why should a browser be different?

This isn't a bug. Mozilla saves the filename exactly as it gets it from the server.

What does this have to do with "sav[ing] the filename exactly as it gets it from the server"? The default extension for saving would not be changed by fixing this bug; it would just be moved from the filename textbox to the filetype dropdown.

This is essentially the same as bug 101254. When we properly specify *.<ext> as the save-as type, then the extension will be dropped from the save-as file name. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 101254 ***
