New ctrl-t tabs are *really* cool. But I'm used to browsing with multiple
windows, opening new ones with middle-button clicking on links.
The same functionality but opening new tabs would be nice.

I put a proposed patch in the attachment above, I don't know much about all this
UI stuff, so I just copied what's in there for "Open in New Window", and it
worked (I'm quite impressed ;-) ).

ccing mpt. Given that he's opposed to the tabs thing and that he's the UI design
person and that he wants to shorten the context menus.... the outlook is bleak.

It could be in prefs, right ?
You might want to try the patch I submitted, it really improves navigation...

The outlook isn't bleak. In fact, it seems that the majority of people involved
want the context menu item.

this is just my opinion but if I have tabs on, I don't need/want "Open in New
Window"..... Open in New Tab would be a welcome replacement for it!

Absolutely. And if it could be a replacement for middle-click and ctrl-click
too, that would be awesome.

Why not have a two choice selection in preferences to allow a user to choose
whether they prefer tabs or new browser windows? (with the default being
windows for people used to current functionality.)

Some people want to be able to do both. With a pref, you're locked into only
one action.

If having both options is a must, then I think a second option in the context
menu is something that we will need... then, we could have a preference to set
which action is taken by the middle mouse button.

Is there now a preference for middle-button behavior? If not, I'm not sure this
bug is actually completely fixed. Or should that be opened as a new bug?
Ideally, there would be some sort of modifier as well, so shift-middle could be
new tab and unmodified middle could be new window (or vice versa).
Also, I kind of intuitively expect middle-click to open a new tab if tabs are
already active in this window, and to open a new window otherwise. Dunno what to
do with that, but I thought I'd mention it. :)

Just add in your prefs.js the following line :
user_pref("browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick", true);
If you want to open a new tab when you enter a new URL in the location bar, add
the following line :
user_pref("browser.tabs.opentabfor.urlbar", true);
