Java applet over secure proxy not loading

Details
OUr company has just installed a secure proxy to control access to the net over
HTTP FTP etc. This requires logonn with UserId and PAssword
When using Mozilla this works and Mozilla prompts as expected but java applets
don't work ( eg news applet on www.java.sun.com ). I'm using Java 1.4 plugin.
The problem could be in the plugin or Mozilla, I don't know. I've tried setting
proxy info in the plugin to 'Use browser settings' and also set proxy address
explicitly. I don't even know if Mozilla actually uses the plugin or manages
the applet itself.
