Hopefully, this issue will be fixed with the status bar prioritization rework done in bug 1042105. Also of note, a "nice to have" feature in the spec is an ambient notification indicator which gets rid of this icon completely. So my hope is this problem will be a non-issue with the work being done for 2.1.
