cc'ing editor folx. tracy, is this a problem at all from the browser? ie, what happens when you bring up the file picker [File > Open File, or accel+O] from a browser window?

vrfy dup. [side note: plain old file picker from browser wfm, at least, even when picking/opening an image file. tested with 2001.10.12.08-trunk comm bits on linux.]

sairuh, No problem with using file picker from the browser. Am able to open the exact same image that would cause a crash from composer.
