Blocks: timeline
I've quickly asked :smaug about this and it seems all events are being dispatched by EventDispatcher::Dispatch (http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/dom/events/EventDispatcher.cpp#388). Start/End timeline markers can be added there, but for this to make sense, we should only add markers if the event is actually handled by script.
Here's how this could work. This is still a work in progress patch. 2 major problems persist: - an event marker will be recorded for any event that is dispatched as long as the node has a listener, even if that listener is for another event type. - there might be a potential memory leak.

At the moment I don't understand if this is filtering out enough events. My understanding is that the intent is to try to filter out events that do not have a handler. But when I run with this patch included, I see timeline events for mouse motion, clicks, etc -- even on a completely empty page. But I don't know enough yet to know whether this is wrong or not.

But I don't know enough yet to know whether this is wrong or > not. On an empty page, we don't want to see any event markers. We should be showing a marker only if there is a listener (which will eventually trigger a runScript). Testing this patch, I see markers even if there's no listeners. So 2 options: - your patch doesn't filter out events with no listeners; - there are listeners on these events we don't know about. Maybe the devtools add listeners to the page.
Moving the timeline notification to EventListenerManager helped somewhat. There I can examine the listener to distinguish JS handlers from others. With this I get something more expected -- but still not quite perfect. For example on a page with a simple "click" handler, I still see a rogue event. Debugging indicates it is a mousedown event installed by toolkit/content/browser-content.js (or maybe browser/base/content/content.js). I'm still looking for how to distinguish this handler from the ordinary one.

But I don't know enough yet to know whether this is wrong or > not. Events are, in general, dispatched whether or not there are listeners for it (because just dispatching is in common case faster than checking whether there are listeners in that particular event target chain). So if you want to filter out stuff, you may want to check to which event target (mTarget) EventListenerManager is attached to.
> http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/base/content/content. > js does indeed add a click event listener, but it is added > to TabChildGlobal, not to some element in the page, nor document nor window > object. So if you want to filter out stuff, you may > want to check to which event target (mTarget) EventListenerManager is > attached to. Thanks very much! This is quite helpful. I was doing vaguely the right thing at least, looking for a way to differentiate the cases in EventListenerManager. However I still don't know the "principled" way to distinguish the cases. If I debug the spot where I've inserted the timeline marker I can see these types for mTarget: $35 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 $36 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 $37 = (nsGlobalWindow *) 0x7fa8a4183400 $38 = (nsGlobalWindow *) 0x7fa8a4183400 $39 = (nsXULElement *) 0x7fa8aea8be50 $40 = (nsXULElement *) 0x7fa8aea8be50 $41 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 $42 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 I think I want to exclude the nsInProcessTabChildGlobal objects but include the others. I have another test I'm running that puts a couple of click handlers on window, like: window.addEventListener("click",function(ev) { w+=10; document.body.style.border = w + "px solid black"; }, true); window.addEventListener("click",function(ev) { w+=10; document.body.style.border = w + "px solid black"; }, false); When I look at this with the timeline and click exactly once, I get three events. However examining the types in gdb gives: $73 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 $74 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 $75 = (nsXULElement *) 0x7fa8aea8be50 $76 = (nsXULElement *) 0x7fa8aea8be50 $77 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 $78 = (nsInProcessTabChildGlobal *) 0x7fa8a77a7c60 ... but I don't understand this at all :-( I think that 3rd event is the phase 3 click event, but I don't understand why the target would be nsInProcessTabChildGlobal here.
(In reply to Tom Tromey :tromey from comment #9) > I think I want to exclude the nsInProcessTabChildGlobal objects but include > the others. Don't know why you'd want to exclude nsInProcessTabChildGlobal, but include other chrome stuff, like the XULElement. > ... but I don't understand this at all :-( > I think that 3rd event is the phase 3 click event, but I don't > understand why the target would be nsInProcessTabChildGlobal here. It is not quite clear to me what you're doing here...

This was very helpful, thank you. I will try to figure out why I'm off on the wrong track here.
Event propagation in non-e10s-FF is: (capture phase) WindowRoot chrome window chrome document ancestor elements of the xul:browser xul:browser InProcessTabChildGlobal web page's window web page's document ancestor elements of the event target (target phase) target node (bubble phase) [the objects in capture phase in reversed order].
Here's a patch that seems to work when I try various things. I'm not at all sure that the filtering logic in HandleEventInternal is correct. Note that with this patch in place, it's possible (even easy) to see nested markers in PopProfileTimelineMarkers. This will happen whenever an event handler itself calls dispatchEvent. It's simple to see the problem by adding this to nsDocShell::PopProfileTimelineMarkers: NS_ASSERTION(!(isSameMarkerType && endPayload->GetMetaData() == TRACING_INTERVAL_START), "nested markers"); I think there are a few ways to fix the problem. The simplest way would be to first wait for bug 1071056 to land, since this would clear up how memory management of InternalProfileTimelineMarker is going to work. Then, arrange for PopProfileTimelineMarkers to remove nested markers. Other, more efficient, methods are possible as well, though my understanding is that this code isn't expected to deal with too many objects.

First I wanted to say that I wasn't consciously ignoring what you said in comment #4. I was under the impression that it was ok due to comment #5. But now I see what you mean. Thanks for being patient. I suppose this code could check nsDocShell::gProfileTimelineRecordingsCount, like nsRefreshDriver does. I will try it out and also try to come up with a test showing the problem. Did the filtering code in HandleEventInternal look correct to you? I was uncertain about it.
+ if (docShell && listener->mListenerType != Listener::eNativeListener) { + nsCOMPtr<nsINode> node(do_QueryInterface(mTarget)); + nsCOMPtr<nsIDocument> doc; + + if (node) { + doc = node->OwnerDoc(); + } else { + nsCOMPtr<nsPIDOMWindow> window(GetTargetAsInnerWindow()); + if (window) { + doc = window->GetExtantDoc(); + } + } This part looks ok, assuming we want record only events dispatched to a document in a browsing context. We just need to get the docshell in a different way. (I do assume we'll want to record also other events, like XHR's load event and its progress events etc., but perhaps that all can happen in a followup bug.)
> Did the filtering code in HandleEventInternal look correct to you? I was > uncertain about it. Replying to myself... With the new approach filtering isn't really needed in the same way. We don't need to filter out chrome event handlers because their docShell will simply not be recording. I think this should allow everything to continue to work when debugging chrome as well. The new approach seems to work fine (thanks again!) and I'll upload it once I've written a new test.
(In reply to Olli Pettay [:smaug] from comment #4) > It might be, depending on what the use case here is, to use the docshell > from the Window object of the DOMEvent, > see mozilla::dom::Event::GetParentObject in Event.h. > Also, note, DOMEvent is created on demand from Event > http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/dom/events/ > EventListenerManager.cpp?rev=df6ba75a47bd#994 I tried this, and I think this isn't exactly what we want. Specifically (... since there's a high probability I did it wrong ...) I tried something like: nsCOMPtr<nsPIDOMWindow> window = do_QueryInterface((*aDOMEvent)->InternalDOMEvent()->GetParentObject()); docShell = window->GetDocShell(); ... then used this docShell to report timeline markers. This yields way too many events in the timeline, so even without debugging I can tell it's not filtering properly. I think the problem here is that we want to differentiate based on the current listener. But since the DOMEvent is just created once we end up differentiating based on something else. Looking at mTarget (this is all in EventListenerManager::HandleEventInternal) seems to work ok. But before sending this I think we need a resolution of bug 1071056, per comment #13. Also I'm having some difficulty understanding a test case using document.implementation.createHTMLDocument. This seems to create a new docShell but at the moment I don't understand how to discover this in the test case itself, to enable marker recording on it.
(In reply to Tom Tromey :tromey from comment #18) > Also I'm having some difficulty understanding a test case using > document.implementation.createHTMLDocument. This seems to create a new > docShell No. docShell is for active browsing contexts only. document.implementation.createHTMLDocument just creates a document.
(In reply to Olli Pettay [:smaug] from comment #19) > (In reply to Tom Tromey :tromey from comment #18) > > Also I'm having some difficulty understanding a test case using > > document.implementation.createHTMLDocument. This seems to create a new > > docShell > No. docShell is for active browsing contexts only. > document.implementation.createHTMLDocument just creates a document. You're right, of course, but I'm confused about something else as well. The test looks like this: let doc = content.document.implementation.createHTMLDocument("doc"); let p = doc.createElement("p"); p.innerHTML = "inside"; doc.body.appendChild(p); p.addEventListener("zebra", function(e) {console.log("hi");}); p.dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent("zebra", {"detail":{"coat":"stripey"}})); Using gdb I believe I can see a new docshell made when evaluating the appendChild. However when dispatching the "zebra" event I see that my current logic in HandleEventInternal indeed does not find a docshell -- earlier I hadn't checked this and was working on the theory that the new docshell instance was simply not recording.
See bug 1080013 for the string change.
Here's another revision of the patch. It's been rebased. This one reports XMLHttpRequest events and also events on objects created by createHTMLDocument. I split the "find the docShell" code into a helper function since it seemed unwieldy inside HandleEventInternal. This version still doesn't have tests exercising all the paths in GetDocShellForTarget. I tried a bit to consolidate some of the cases but my experiments failed. It still seems a bit ugly to me though. This version also still needs a fix for the nested marker problem, as mentioned earlier.
(In reply to Tom Tromey :tromey from comment #22) > This version also still needs a fix for the nested marker problem, as > mentioned earlier. How do you plan to handle that? Add a unique id to the marker?
(In reply to Paul Rouget [:paul] (slow to respond. Ping me on IRC) from comment #23) > (In reply to Tom Tromey :tromey from comment #22) > > This version also still needs a fix for the nested marker problem, as > > mentioned earlier. > > How do you plan to handle that? Add a unique id to the marker? I was planning to notice nested markers of the same name and then just drop the inner ones. This can be done in the inner loop in PopProfileTimelineMarkers. But first I was going to rebase onto whichever patch from bug 1071056 is chosen. This is needed because it makes dealing with the marker memory management simpler.
First, writing real tests reveals that I was testing the XMLHttpRequest code incorrectly, and so this isn't working yet after all. But that's ok because there's a bigger issue to sort out. > I was planning to notice nested markers of the same name and then just drop > the inner ones. This can be done in the inner loop in > PopProfileTimelineMarkers. After looking at it more seriously, I think it won't really work well. We may see any number of unterminated nested markers, so we'd need to keep a stack of start markers somehow. Instead it seems simpler to just keep track of the most recent start marker and "start depth". Then we can just discard new start markers when they are added. The bigger issue is that I think the DOM event code will interact with the code to generate script markers. In particular I think the nesting fix will suppress script markers originating with events. While this might be fine right now, it will probably not be what we want longer term. For instance, the script marker will carry some metadata that we'd like to preserve -- metadata not available on the enclosing dom event marker. One idea might be to only suppress nested markers of the same name. That way nested DOM Event markers would be ignored, but a DOM Event surrounding a script marker would still generate two markers.
Paul, could you please provide some guidance on how you want me to deal with nested markers?

Attached patch add timeline marker from EventListenerManager (obsolete) (deleted) — Splinter Review
Here's a version of the patch that handles XMLHttpRequest and createHTMLDocument. It includes tests. It's been rebased onto fx-team; though note that it will require a further update once the patch for bug 1070089 goes in. This version suppresses nested DOM event markers. These can occur when an event listener calls dispatchEvent. Note that it is careful not to suppress other kinds of nested markers. In particular it is ok to have a sync reflow nested inside a DOM event. I'm not super happy with the "strcmp" approach to detecting DOM event markers. I'd be more inclined to use an enum to represent marker types; but I left it as-is to keep the change minimal. Also, there's existing code in PopProfileTimelineMarkers that takes this approach. An earlier version of the patch got the placement of the start marker emission slightly wrong and could theoretically have emitted a "start" marker without an "end". I'd prefer to use an RAII-based approach here instead to avoid this possibility; but again, the current approach keeps the patch smaller. Finally, EventListenerManager::GetDocShellForTarget needs extra review. It seems pretty ugly to me, but at the same time all the cases seemed necessary. One thought I had was to move the logic out into virtual methods on EventTarget subclasses; but I didn't try this and am unsure if it would make the patch substantially cleaner.

I think this version addresses all the review comments. Nested markers are handled by an additional bit of logic in PopProfileTimelineMarkers. This part of the patch looks messy but is mostly just reindenting.

I looked into these failures a bit and concluded that some are dups of bug 1087109. The others appear to be intermittent as well, since I re-did the try and don't see them: https://tbpl.mozilla.org/?tree=Try&rev=87935a291ebd I did have to make one tiny change to make the patch build everywhere. I'll upload the final patch shortly. I think it is good to go.
The patch required one trivial change to compile everywhere: +#include "mozilla/DOMEventTargetHelper.h" This is included in EventListenerManager.cpp by some route (I didn't investigate) on some platforms but not all.
