Same thing happens on OS X with opening links from Terminal.app. Works fine with non-e10s windows but with e10s enabled I get an empty tab. The tab however does have the correct URL set as it's title.
Blocks: e10s
Hi, I have tested this on latest Aurora (46.0a2) release and I have managed to reproduce it with e10s enabled. I followed the provided steps and with e10s enable after I clicked the PDF link an empty tab it opened but does not close automatically. With non e10s the empty tab close automatically. Firefox: 46.0a2, Build ID: 20160203004041, User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0

I also encounter this bug with firefox 50 (since 47 or 48). (on debian and windows too) A lot of our users (i'm developper of a JEE accounting web app) are complaining about this bug. We have discovered a way to correct this : in about:config, change extensions.e10sBlocksEnabling and extensions.e10sBlockedByAddons to true. (it's simply disable e10s) This is clearly not a good solution. We could do this change for our internal users, but not for our customers. Did a patch is in good way for this bug ?
I can confirm this bug on Win7(64bit). It first happened to me when I updated to firefox 50.0 (64bit). Now with firefox 51.0.1 (64bit) it is still there. I often open PDF links out of a web application to show it in external Foxit Reader. Since ff50.0 every opened PDF leaves open an empty tab. In previous ff version this empty tab would appear only for a second and then close automatically. My solution to this bug I got from Camp Firefox: In about:config, change browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 from true to false. This will disable e10s.

Moving to p3 because no activity for at least 1 year(s). See https://github.com/mozilla/bug-handling/blob/master/policy/triage-bugzilla.md#how-do-you-triage for more information
