A WIP that mostly works - there are some problems with _loadList not being called correctly, especially during filtering, that I'll keep looking into.
How much work is left, or should we just log a new bug for this task?

This is bitrotted now and doesn't apply, and we also decided that there were better places to optimize for performance. This was kind of just experimental on my part, and more for code cleanliness rather than any other reason.
