Steps to reproduce:

I've noticed in the last few nightly builds I've used that occasionally some tabs will go blank. Maybe a week or two? No known way to reproduce.


Actual results:

I have many tabs open and sometimes I will click on them and they will be blank (white). The URL, tab page description and favicon are all still for the page. This is not specific to any page or site, it seems to be random.

When I reload one of the blank tabs I can see the status of all the elements reloading but the tab stays blank. I have tried hard reload as well but it makes no difference. As I'm writing this several of the tabs that were blank are now no longer blank however several still are.


Expected results:

My tabs should not go blank.
tracking-e10s: --- → ?
I just went through all my e10s tabs and found a few tabs --different from the blank ones-- have a 'tab crashed' message, maybe that's related.

Ray, do you have steps to reproduce this problem? Can you please share the crash report IDs from about:crashes if they happened at the same time as the blank tabs?

Sorry Chris, no steps to reproduce and nothing in the crashes. I'm actually surprised to see only several crashes in there, I've crashed a lot. I just updated to 20141209030205, I'll let you know if I see it again.
Having the same problem, every page goes blank if new tab is opened or they don't show at all when URL is inputted.

Example: I'm opening Gmail in new tab and it says in title that I have messages and stuff (site title) but the page is blank, while page seems loaded completely.

Workaround: Open another tab, tear off blank gmail tab so it appears as new window. Vua la, the page is displayed correctly, but opening new tab in that new window makes it blank again. Another way to properly see sites is to hold SHIFT while clicking a link so it always opens pages in new windows, but that renders tab browsing unavailable...

I can say that I noticed the problem when I disconnected HDMI and VGA cables and was using it on internal display and then connected external display back. I'm running Nightly on 2 profiles with -no-remote and both have same issue.

Will try to run windows updates and GFX driver updates, and create new comment with info if that helped. The problem doesn't appear in Chromium though and other software.
Updated all mentioned but FOUND A PROBLEM WITH ADD-ON.

Tile Tabs 11.13 is not compatible with current Nightly release. Installed it on new profile and it made all tab pages blank when new tab is opened.

How to reproduce (not sure if it's the same bug as in 1st post, but seems similar and may be other addon incompatibility):
1. Create new profile,
2. Install Tile Tabs 11.13,
3. Nightly (alpha daily channel) tab browsing is broken.

Yeah I don't know about that. I use this profile exclusively for testing and I only have two extensions installed, FiddlerHook 2.4.9.7 (changes my proxy settings to use Fiddler web debugging proxy) and Gecko Profiler 1.15.2 (profiling stopped at the time).

Thanks for testing, Mr_KrzYch00. I think you have found a different bug. In comment 0, Ray said that only occasionally some tabs will go blank, but when I install Tile Tabs 11.13, every tab is always blank. We can track the Tile Tabs problem in bug 729662.

Ray, does disabling FiddlerHook and/or Gecko Profiler fix the blank tab problem? I suspect this is an addon bug (similar to the Tile Tabs bug reported by Mr_KrzYch00 in comment 5).

It hasn't happened since 2014-12-09 when I updated to 20141209030205, which I am still using. I got a lot of use in this weekend. I will disable both add-ons and of course update the thread if it happens again. Also I plan to update Nightly tomorrow.

I can confirm that this started to happen in this month. I know add-ons update in the background so it's hard to tell if they did or didn't. After downloading last Nightly daily releases problem appeared.

The description in bug 729662 seems to not occur to me, this one seems more suited or it's entirely different bug. Why? First look at the date of the other bug and the version of Tile Tabs. It's pretty old there. Second, the add-on WAS NOT updated lately, instead Firefox Nightly was and the bug appeared, so it must be related to some change in the FF N code. Same thing is happening with Tile View 3.5 that is dated October 25, 2014 (as Tile Tabs) and I'm pretty sure I updated Nightly several times till today, and the bug appeared in December for me. Before I had NO ISSUES with Tile Tabs, it can be configured in various ways and the person in bug 729662 must've faced some misconfiguration or entirely not related to mine, issue.
Sorry to post again. I just wanted to add that the user in bug 729662 needs to MINIMIZE and RESTORE FF for his bug to fix itself. I just tested it in my case, doesn't help. My workaround is to TEAR OFF the tab, so new window of FF most likely re-renders the page or/and the Tile Tab plugin doesn't talk with FF until another tab is opened. Then it looks like it wants to do something but due to Nightly, most likely having changed something in the code, it fails.

The other interesting thing is, when You use new profile the tab always reopens about:newtab when You try to open some webpage, the title of the tab seems to change to site that SHOULD SHOW, it looks like it's opened in memory (???) but doesn't appear, instead about:newtab seems to re-render. After picking show sourcecode, the code of about:newtab shows. In my opinion Addon should not make FF completely unusable, the FF should make addon fail to work. For now it seems like exploit in FF Nightly - some addon could for example use this exploit to display fake webpage instead of about:newtab and really loaded to memory page, at least I think so.
